In-Game References
The upside of playing through every single Amiga game for the HOL is that one often comes across amusing references left by crafty developers. Here we shall name them all!
A reference is generally a one-off pointer to something cultural e.g. another Amiga game, a film or TV show. Wiz 'n' Liz, the first example below, has a number of famous images that come from outside the game - but they don't really count as references. For example, it has a Grim Reaper which is too abstract and the Pyramids and the Statue of Liberty which are used in many games to conjure Egypt and the USA. What will probably become clear is that Amiga developers watched a little too much science fiction - resulting in a plethora of sci-fi references. The numbers [x] below refer to each screenshot in order. Anyway... Wiz 'n' Liz A game chock-full of sci-fi and game references. References: [1] Dr. Who's Tardis and his sidekick K9 [2] Puggsy - another Amiga game published by Psygnosis [3] Puggsy again [4] The 2001: A Space Odyssey black monolith (up at the top right) [5] A lame Star Wars reference! Just an addition to the Wiz'n'Liz info. Picture number 3 in the first panel contains caricatures of Andy Ingram and Jon Burton from Traveller's Tales (developers of Puggsy). The sub-game has you throwing tomatoes at them. The reason for this is that there is a level in Puggsy containing Wiz'n'Liz wabbits that you can shoot and kill with the laser. Martyn Chudley (programmer) and Mike Waterworth (artist) were just getting some good-natured revenge.
