Macro help needed for adf2disk => dms (multiple files)
G'day folks,
'been reading through the various posts on how to convert adf files to dms via the UAE interface. I have managed to convert single files via the CLI with no problems. However, I would like to convert multiple files at once using a macro/arexx command - and this is where I am stuffed as I cannot manage to do this at all as I have never written one. Have had a look at a few arexx files and tried to change them here and there and have had no luck for the past 2 days. Could someone please let me know how I go about writing a macro to be able to do this, and is Arexx the right tool ? I have my ADF files in DH1:ADF/ and want the DMS'd files to go to DH1: DMS/ The macro would need file XYZ.ADF to be written to DF0: (adf2dik) and then written to DMS via the DMS command -Simple I am sure, but when I run my "would be" macro it comes back saying that the program was not found - what this means I dunno !! But when I do the steps one at a time (CLI) there is no problem. Thanks guys. DC33 |

Why on earth do you want to save as DMS? DMS is buggy, certain compression modes will not generate valid data and you will get bad archives! Avoid DMS!
Once you find a suitable archiver, you can batch convert all your ADFs with DOpus very easily. |

I duuno.... DMS is what I know - this is perhaps why ? As I have so many ADF's in my collection, and also due to my proper amiga disk collection becoming corrupt over the years (moisture + over 4000 disks), I am keen on getting some of my apps/games etc back up and running on my 1200/2000/600 amigas.
Any help, suggestions on how else to do it etc is MUCH apreciated really, Cheers |

I really wouldn't recommend dms files at all.
If it's just for backup why not just zip them up? Or you could create adz files by gzipping them? |

All I want to do is convert adf files back to dms so I can use them on my real amiga machines. As far as I am aware, converting them back to DMS is the way to go. I am running WinUAE but a real amiga cannot be beaten.
It ain't a matter of backup, just revival more or less. Cheers |

How are you getting these files on to your Amiga by the way?

ADF files are on the PC primarily, however I have CD backups which are accessible to the A1200/200 via CD rom

the program you mentioned first adf2disk is used to write adf files to disk, I'm still not sure what you want dms for...

Good point really. Being an amiga user directly (not via emulation) I must admit (sigh) that I have never thought of doing so really. I have only got into the WinUAE recently so I am still learning you could say.
So in other words, what you are telling me is that ADF files can be used on a real Amiga...? But how may I ask (stupid q'n, but I need to learn). |

Hehe...
You've been doing it in a very roundabout way. DMS files are essentially compressed ADF files, and there are tools out there to convert from DMS to ADF and vice versa without ever involving a floppy drive (or virtual one). ADF2DISK will happily write adf files back to disk without any problems as will a myriad of other tools. Pretty much any tool that can write a dms tool to a floppy can probably do the same with an adf. |

So, I am still at a loss really, although you blokes are being helpful. Maybe I should ask in a different way then!! 1. If I want to use adf files on the amiga, apparently this is possible - but how? 2. If this is so, please do not bother to help me with a script to convert my files; I would appreciate knowing how to use adf files directly on the amiga - I always thought that adf was purely for the UAE platform. Cheers, dc33 |

Well the only real way to use adf files is to write them back to a floppy disk using your real Amiga.

If I can write multiple adf files back to dms, save them onto cd and burn them, then I could access the cd on my amiga and un-dms the disks back to normal amiga working floppies. Rather than having to sit there and un-adf files by the thousands, I would like to be able to them in a batch with a script of some rort which I am absolutely no f'n good at. |

Its a quest to relive and experience the Amiga the way it was intended I suppose... No other reason really.
Why have an real Amiga if it can't be used ? |
