What audio rate were you using? For real hardware or without JIT then I recommend dropping to very low quality like 8k or 11k, don't use 44k for any of the audio mixing rates.

i left default rate, so 11k. i will try again using 8k.

Oh okay, probably won't make much difference then. Some people change the soundblaster rate but forget about changing the mixer rate.

Another handy tip for people is to first run DOSBox in window mode which shows how many cycles it is using in the window bar text, you can then use the 'hot keys' to tweak the cycles up and down to get the best performance for your specific machine by running a test game. Once you find the best number of cycles you can update the config file with this setting and then switch back to full screen for best performance.
