Idea for pc-amiga transfer

Hey guys - looks like im back again :/ lol, stoopid amigas wont stay away..

Anyway, a while agoi tried different kinds of networking - i even bought NetworkPC from wierdscience (couldnt get it to work either side really), so now i have just had another idea..

I have a USB2 IDE hard drive enclosure containing a 5gb 2.5inch drive.

You can easly yank the cover off and plug in another 2.5" hd, i want to temporarily connect my amiga1200 (standard)'s 80mb 2.5" drive into it - Somehow get an AmigaFS driver - then either transfer loads of adfs with stuff *or* somehow use in conjuction with winuae and write to the drive itself (as in reinstall workbench - my real workbench disks are corrupt)

Okay - well im now gonna go get the drive out of the amiga and whack it in the usb2 thing.. will update soon..

Okay this is what i have done:

Am about to plug in *gulp*, hopefuly it doesnt explode...

EDIT:: Okay, it didnt explode, green light, nothing happening in windows.. Expected.

So now, need to find AmigaFS access, and then if it will even work!

Im still looking around for AMIGAFFS support for windows, i know linux supports it but thats a big annoyance and to install that would invovle repartitioning - or virtual pc - that might work

Hope everything goes ok. I think there are a few threads about accessing Amiga HD's from WinUAE - do a search. I have absolutely no experience in this area.

Just as a suggestion:

There are loads of 3comm PCMCIA network cards kicking round ebay at the moment for around £8. The 3comm driver off aminet lists compatible cards. The 3C589 models seem fairly common last I checked. These are a good solution for file transfer too.

Start WinUAE, go to the Harddrives tab and click on "Add Harddrive". It should offer your external HDD. If it doesn't, start WinUAE with the -disableharddrivesafetycheck option and retry.

A lot of 30 PCMCIA NEC2000 compatible cards just ended on eBay. Only £2 each aswell.

I tried the enclosure idea, but the problem was my drive was to fat to fit in properly so it didn't work

Using 3.5" drives now anyway. Makes life a lot easer.

Okay WinUAE doesnt detect it - im not really suprised because windows isnt acknowledging a USB device even, which makes me think - it wont work,

so next ill trythe 5.1gb in the amiga1200 itself OR, ill try and get some money to buy an ethernet thing..

What ill try right now is to connect the ps2 dongle, this is sometimes needed if the harddrive in the enclosure isnt getting enough power (leeches off the ps2 5v line i think)

EDIT: Powers up fine, just no acknowledgement in windows, i doubt i will find an amigaffs driver for windows (unless ...) but i know linux works in that sense, so i think ill whack knoppix in (the cd-based distro) ..saves me installing..

Click "Add Harddrive", exit and check winuaebootlog.txt. Do you see anything about harddrive detection? (or attach whole winuaebootlog.txt)

You should see the drive only in Windows device manager.

Not even in device manager, I tried knoppix linux too, (although that only booted thru virtualpc - for some reason it gives the error on boot: 'Error only one processor' - no prob in virtual pc - .. silyl cpus).

But yeah, to summarise i dont think it will work at all. In device managerit doesnt even acknowledge anything sitting on the usb hubs other than my webcam and scanner, placing he original 5gb hard drive in it returns it to normal.

Another idea - is to perhaps format the 5gb as amigafs, install everything on it and then install into amiga - will that work? 5gb too much?

Sorry one last question - to bloodwych about the ethernet - I have a standard a1200, only 2mb ram, and im guessing id need software installed to get the ethernet working (the whole problem is that i cant transfer anything)

Thoughts anyone? on anything?

EDIT: Irrelevant now: but this was what came up in winuaeboot.log -

This is running winuae normally:

Works quite well ( sometimes you have to remount a drive 'cause it isn't recognized ) as far as i can tell you.

If you want to try affs support without installing linux, and you have a very fast internet connections try knoppix that is a live cd ( can be runned from cd ).

It's enought a mount -t affs -o ro /dev/hdb1 to mount the first amiga partition of the disk connected to ide primary slave ( for example ), then you can do whatever you want on the files as if they were local.

Also writing is possible and works ( -rw )

Edit: i have just seen you have already tried with knoppix . What version are you using?

Yeah as i said earlier i tried knoppix - any linux distro with a modular kernal higher than like 2.2x would work - *But* the harddrive appears to be incompatible with the USB interface..

...So ive given up on that idea..

Im about to bid on a 3com PCMCIA 10mbit Model 3CCE589EC card, to network the amiga into my network.

Which brings up a point - networking will still be okay? - Im not going to be doing a crossover computer to computer networking, i have a proper little home network with a router/adsl/wireless access point. Im assuming it would be easiest to setup an FTP server on my PC machine, then connect from the amiga?? yes?

thanks for all the help you guys- i must say you do rock the boat.

I haven't set mine up yet, but again there are some threads kicking around on this board so do a search. In fact I started one a few days back in the hardware problems section.

I got one of these as it had the perfect cable. He was selling them with buy it now but not anymore it seems.

Hope it works ok once I get chance to set it up.

Okay, update hehe, still havent sorted it all yet, but its cool, eventually it will work.

Okay So i got the network card, never got around to even attempting to install it, because of some past probs with the workbench, i tried to reinstall workbench 3.0 after formatting the 80mb drive. Problem was i didnt write protect the workbench or install disks which were in df0: and df1: (lol), so the install tried installing to the floppies, and now they dont boot, and have no way to get them back. So now i have just bought a 2.5 - 3.5 adapter. Now hoping to plug the drive straight into the pc, and install workbench again. lol. What a muppet i am!

Sorry Mojo, only noticed your thread just now, why dont you stuff the USB interface all together and use a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter when plugging it into a stock PC. I agree with Mtb about having success in using affs under linux, just remember to have amiga partition table support kernel module compiled and ready ontop of the affs module. This way when you run fdisk under linux, it should list all the partitions correctly on the disk. Anyhow, good luck with NIC.

Cheers for the reply, yeah thats what im doing now! the usb failed, so im trying the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. IF winuae wont recognise the drive once ive plugged it in, i will take the linux route - i almost had it with the other drive, the amiga didnt like my ibm travelstar...
And after ive plugged it in, i will attempt the ethernet problem, although i really dont think it will work if it doesnt i will try again to get the wierd science's networkPC kit thing...

This raises a question - Are there any workbench installations available in hardfiles or whatever - that have loads of extras added in? i only have a stock 1200 with 2mb chip!

take care
