Fixed it. I changed to WPA and it works a treat now! Booting isn't as fast, but it's still about 10% of the time needed to boot win10

Thanks Nobody, this is amazing fun and a more powerful Amiga than I ever could have wished for.

Now we just need to see about getting rid of that 20 floppies limitation - might have to go digging through the FS-UAE source now.

Well..
i made some test.
my hardware config: Intel Core2 Duo E8500, 4 GB RAM, HD 5870 1 GB, Sound Blaster Audigy.

Amilator Alfa works very well, but Openhal don't detect audio card, but it is ok. UAE don't use sounds.
Amilator 4.1.2 crash on Linux Kernel loading because openal cannot detect audio card.

What difference there are from first to latest Amilator versions?
The Linux kernels is the same or in the lastest is based on another distro?

The kernel comes from official Debian buster/sid repositories. Version 4.9 had kernel 4.9 from Debian stretch repositories

It doesn't even have sound on my big laptop so this is how to fix (i will include a fix next release):

Run amilator usb. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go in a terminal or F2, F3 etc
Login as root, password root
run the following command
cp /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf /amiga/
It will copy alsa.conf to your usb root directory.
Restart PC then open alsa.conf with a text editor preferably Notepad++
find the lines
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0
they are lines 68-69 on Notepad++
change 0 to 1. Save.
Open searchadf file inside /floppies (with Notepad++)
Add with your text editor the following:
cp /amiga/alsa.conf /usr/share/alsa/
alsactl restore

Reboot PC, run Amilator again and see for yourself.

PS i do this without reboot with vim which is included in Amilator:
login as root pass root
vi /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf
find the lines
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0

Press "a" to enable writing in text. Correct 0 to 1.
Press ESC, then :w then :q (obvious: write and quit)
then on terminal
cp /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf /amiga/
then
vi /amiga/floppies/searchadf
it opens, write under the existing script
cp /amiga/alsa.conf /usr/share/alsa/
alsactl restore

Then ESC and :w and :q
Press ctrl-alt-F7 you go back to fs-uae and F12-->> "X"

Maybe you could ask Frode Solheim about it??

Because they don't relate to my problems in any way, shape or form? For example:

My original query was about getting it onto the 'net, not about swapping USB drives around. My original complaint was that (due to only having one USB slot) I was having to power down, switch the USB drive to Windows machine, add software, Eject, insert back into Amilator laptop, power up... And when installing MCP, that was really frustrating as each time it ran I needed a new library or MUI class.

Hence, I asked how to get on the 'net.

And again, that's nothing to do with my query as such. I had already figured that out, having already installed Miami and been informed that there was already a TCP stack running - the bsd socket library was already enabled. My issue was getting the underlying Linux to connect to my wifi, which was an issue as Windows reported the security as AES instead of WPA. Once that was changed in vswm config, it all worked.

So that's why I ignored your posts

I think I will. Either that, or create a new utility (UI frontend) for uaectrl to allow the user to swap floppies in the floppies/mount folder and optionally reboot or return to WB. Currently the only front end require a CLI tooltype and has no decent file requester.

If your laptop/PC has media keys on keyboard they also work for choosing and entering disks to floppy drives (after you put them on mount folder)

Some tests:
Old alpha version starts after 74 seconds
My version starts after 39 seconds and wifi enabled (DHCP stops system to give address)

Sysinfo
Old version 55*A4000 040/25
New version 60*A4000 040/25
Same OS, wb3.9

Mine starts in 41 seconds (core i5M, Acer 5742 laptop), with wifi enabled. That's massively faster than my Win10 box

Rebooting the emulation is pretty much instant.

I've been messing around in syslinux' config file - there's no need for a menu, given that the only other option is memtest... So I've removed the menu and made it boot directly to FS-UAE. The only problem is that we lose the splash screen, and get the syslinux copyright message instead.

Anyone any ideas on how to get the splash to hang around instead of the (C) message? I've been trying most of last night and no luck.

Also: I've enabled opaque window sizing/moving via MultiCX (magic layers and MCP don't work on uaegfx modes) but at 1366x768 they're very slow. Anyone know of any way to improve performance?
