Amiga BASIC written by Microsoft??

"Amiga BASIC is the most powerful BASIC interpreter supplied with any personal computer on the market. Written by Microsoft, it combines in a single language almost every feature found in IBM PC Advanced BASIC plus Microsoft BASIC for the Macintosh. In fact, many IBM BASICA and Macintosh BASIC programs will run on the Amiga with minor modifications."

COMPUTE! ISSUE 70 / MARCH 1986 / PAGE 105. Tom R. Halfhill, Editor

Tell me it isnt so!!!

Sorry, but this was back when Microsoft actually wrote programs for other people, instead of their own operating systems.

Sorry to say, Amiga basic was written by... microsoft.

Yeah, I remember when I saw that back in the day and I wondered "Who the hell is this Microsoft?" I hadn't used a PC back then and Microsoft were not what they are today.

Can't understand why you're so surprised, DDNI? My impression was that Basic was MS:s copyrighted language for beginners so it's not very strange that they developed the Amiga version is it? Besides, who cares? Basic was fun back in the day but sucks pretty badly imo. Regardless if it's Amiga Basic or Basic on the PeeCee.

How could anyone doubt it was written by M$? It was slow and crappy. I'm glad AMOS came along and saved me.

Most CBM Basic was Microsoft wasn't it - I'm pretty sure the C64 and later 8 bit models had MS Basic.

Tramiel was sharp enough though to negotiate a fixed price though so MS didn't make a lot of money out of it despite the amount of C64's that were sold!

Yep. Pet, C64, etc. all used Microsoft BASIC (along with about every other home computer).

But that deal meant that the C64 had the same primitive BASIC as the Pet.
