Has anyone decided to host recent 32-bit PUAE binaries for Ubuntu x86?

Can we have a full report:
- uaerc file in use
- commit version
- description of exactly what you were doing to make it crash
- list of files in the folder and, possibly, dump of folder

It looks to my uneducated mind that there's a fail due to strcpy, and GnoStiC wonders if it might be due to a null pointer being thrown around...

No need to thank me: I'm just the build monkey. This is GnoStiC, Toni's and all real contributors work !

Hello again,

Build from:

PUAE 2.3.3 Beta for Mac OS X – new build!

Build date: 21/6/2011
Commit: c3c13e54b8062f208ef8baff8e7520789135b8c8

http://www.binarydevotion.com/?p=184

Config attached.

Booted with Classic WB (HDF) , clicked drive, first couple of icons appear, then PUAE quit/crashed.... nothing else!

Happens with any mounted HD-Folder. Noticed with one that was just full of WHDload games.

Hope that's enough to help?

anywone who is involved deserves thanks chiark

edit: actually, GnoStiC has already recreated your setup and it works perfectly... Can't make it crash suggesting it's something strange in the filesystem. (I'm wondering about file names...) Could you try with just one small folder, recreate the problem, and then send a zip of the folder?

fek! left my gaming USB drive at work! I will try and reproduce from backups on Sunday.

Having both E-UAE and the HD folders on a USB drive wouldn't be causing it would it? (rather than using the Applications folder.) looking at the OSX bug report thing makes me suspect that may have something to do with it....

E-UAE???

No, that shouldn't cause it: the application simply doesn't care. I don't really know Apple dumps, but it says that the problem is in Thread 0, and thread 0's last logged activity was strcpy... It's as if there's something odd with a file name or other happening.

Can you recreate with just one folder at a time? (Comment out the filesystem entries in the uaerc)

I realise this might have to wait until you have the drive!

err.. yeah, PUAE obviously i slipped into old habits writing that!

I used another System.hdf for classicWB, but managed to reproduce the problem with this set of games as the 2nd HD:

http://www.djcresswell.com/PUAE_Games.zip

i would suspect the Fire&IceDemo/ as the cause!

edit: switch between show as icons and show as text to see the folder appear as "blank" and then eventually invoke the crash, if needed.

i couldn't reproduce it, seems to work fine here.
btw, when you say "show as text", do you mean "view by name"?

yep, "view by name" - apologies for that - writing without reading!! - same as you have shown it but fire and ice appeared as a "blank" line.

i think the USB is formatted FAT32?

edit: i will try and get a video clip or something of it occuring. Happens on my MacMini also, and I i used a different system.HDF for that....

all very strange. :S

i use;
1) fat32 formatted 8gb flash
2) your exact .uaerc
3) my usb flash directory structure is attached

4) a video clip of it occuring would not help me, as i need to reproduce it to see what's going on.

so can you please do the following from a console;
a) cd /Volumes/GAMING/
b) uname -a
c) locale
d) ls -laR

and send me the output?

Confirmed that this crashes *my* build of 2.3.3 as soon as I open the Games directory.

I used ClassicWB UAE with Workbench 3.1.

Rebuilding now with latest changes and will report back.

Rebuilt with latest from git (978af6c319fabc16ea23690ab795117b027fdfe2) and PUAE no longer runs even with most minimal setup... Compiles fine. Unknown whether this is a function of the Lion/XCode 4.1 update or due to code.

GnoStiC, will mail you!

OK, GnoStiC has found the root cause here - it seems to be around allocating memory for strings with a variable as the size argument, and if the variable is null or 0 then trying to release the result returned from the allocation causes the crash.

I'll debug this further for GnoStiC when I'm back near my mac again

Would anyone mind posting a step-by-step guide to getting this to build on Ubuntu (with JIT)?

Excellent, thank you very much. That was probably the issue, and I will give it a try.
