@sink

I am a little confused,

As far as I know, the maximum amount of Chip RAM on any Amiga is 2MB.

The A4000 and the A4000T can have upto 16MB of FAST ram (in 4 banks of 4MB) this combined with the chip ram will give you a total of 18MB (2MB CHIP/16MB FAST)

the 2MB CHIP is shared with all the custom chips - each chip uses the 2MB CHIP RAM pool and the CPU feeds in and take data out of this area.

Fast RAM is ONLY used by the CPU, no custom chip can use this space - because of this the CPU doesn't have to wait for other custom chips to do their task and take full advantage of this area to run as FAST as possible - hence the name FAST RAM =)

The only Virtual RAM program I remember allowed you to use hard drive space as paged memory (as long as you had an MMU I think)

Anyway I do hope that helps.

If you add more than 2 MB Chip ram, it's not an A4000T any more because a real Amiga cannot have more than 2 MB Chip ram.

But yes, certainly it's useful, otherwise Toni wouldn't have added the option. If you use the native Amiga chip set for graphics, you can never have enough Chip RAM.

If you use a graphics card (RTG mem + Picasso96) then Chip RAM is not so important.

If you don't use the emulated graphics card, then you don't need one. Set RTG mem to 0 then.

You can calculate the amount of RTG memory a screen needs from its resolution by this formula:

with * height * depth_in_bytes / 1024 / 1024

For example a 1680 x 1050 screen with 32 bits calculates like this:

1680 * 1050 * 4 / 1024 / 1024 = 6.7 MB

So if you want to open your Workbench screen with this resolution, you need at least 8 MB of RTG memory. If you want to open some windows on this screen also, you should better use 16 or 32 MB.
