Apollo 1240 >1260 CPU Socket

I have an Apollo 1240 and I'm preparing for an upgrade to an 060. I have a 5-3.3V adapter and a 64MB SIMM slot mod (with 64MB Stick)
I would like to put a socket on the board and have a couple of questions. Before I do any other mods, if I was to remove the 040 and put in a socket that I could use for an 060 (18x18 224 pin) could I still use the 040 until the 060 arrives. I have seen that there is a 206 pin socket specifically for the 060 but I have seen 060's in 224 pin sockets in the past.
Am I missing something?
Thank for any info.

68040 Sockets are 179 Pin layout (3 rows)

68060 sockets are 223 Pin Layout if Full (4 rows) & 206 Pin if partial.

Obviously, it would be unwise to solder 179 pin socket if upgrading at a later date.

Don't let your excitement of going 060, make you forget to change the Regulator at the time of upgrading.

You can just put a fully pinned socket in which will support both the 040 and the 060. You will then be able to swap between the two at will removing the power regulator and swapping some resistors/jumpers (that's what I do on mine).

I was luckily able to purchase one of these sockets back in 2010 or so before they got massively overpriced.

If you can't find one for cheap, you can just build one yourself by using a bunch of "tulip" pin header strips. A bit of glue to make everything more reliable and sturdier and presto

Yes indeed but the Glue method could get messy.....

Anthony Hoffman did this for my 0ld CSMKIII Socket here:

http://amiga.serveftp.net/Cyberstorm_socket.html

& no Glue, there has to be a gap.
