Inconsistent results in floppy disk tests among test kit and x-copy
Greetings,
I am getting inconsistent results when I test a floppy disk among Amiga Test Disk and X-Copy 4. Something like the r/w test goes full green on one and not on the other. Now my questions are: 1. Is there a definitive way to test for defective disks? 2. Should I simply throw away disks that present errors on either Amiga Test Disk or X-Copy? Thank you |

Perhaps get a legit copy of X-Copy from http://jope.fi/xcopy/ :-) There is no official version 4.
X-Copy is ok for checking disks. Of course only DOS disks are testable, any original game disks will show a variety of errors depending on the disk track format and amount of protection tracks. As for disks that show errors, you can format them and if they format error-free, you can put some data on them and continue using them. If formatting is not successful, then the disks are bad and should be discarded. Copy any useful data off them before formatting, of course. |

MyFormat also supports track level mark as bad. Sector level bad block marking does not make sense with Amiga floppies.

yep, also Allowbad and few others support or bad blocks or bad tracks - and you are absolutely right - better to mark whole track due a way how Paula works.
