Pinball fantasies.

hi all,

I have just been looking at the disk scans of pinball fantasies, and noticed that that version was copyright 1993, and had stick on disk labels.

I have a 4 disk version (original), copyright 1992, but the disk doesnt have stuck on labels, it has the writing printed directly to the disk.

I am thinking like... Different version here ? (1 PAL disk and 3 course disks)

Want me to scan them ? cos mine look better than the stuck on labels..

I really got to get my A500 reassembled from the move 6 months ago and get caps'ing again.

Are we talking about the OCS version ? The scans are from the version released in Germany. (I'm sure, because I've dumped and scanned it )

I'm no experienced CAPS scanner/dumper myself, but I believe whiteb could be thinking of the AGA edition.

Yes but the game is coded OCS only, it will run on AGA machines like A1200 but the AGA version is recommended for an A1200.

I think the manuals to these two version are the same? If everything else is the same, and the disks look better, I have no problems replacing the disk scans - just as long as the rest of the package is the same...

If his version really has 3 course disks, the manual cannot be the same.

But 3 course disks would mean 6 tables... Maybe it's a budget version or a re-release ?

Here are all informations about my version:

I dont have the box any more only had limited space when I emigrated from the UK to Australia back in 1990 But the box was the same as yours from memory.

You judge for yourselves.

Have you played this 4-disk version lately? What are the extra tables on there?

I know that the third course disk was (also?) sold separately. So I guess it does not really belong to the other disks. That would explain why the manual covers only four tables.

Nup, came in the box that way.

I may not have the box anymore, but I do remember if I bought the disks seperately or not. And in this case....... the 4 disks (Pal disk and 3 course) are what was sold to me in the one pack. This also suggests to me that I should get my A500 assembled again (with A530) and image them up so Fiath can settle this once and for all. My feeling about this, is that there are only 4 courses on the disks, (I can only vaguely remember playing 4 courses) and it has different disk layout than yours.....

In any event, I am gonna have to speed up the assembling of my A500 and image them.

[edit] GOCHA !!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHDLOAD install download site has the installer info file linked.... and in the file it says..

This patch applies to:
- Pinball Fantasies ECS (c) 1992 21st Century Entertainment (4 disk version)
- Pinball Fantasies AGA (c) 1994 21st Century Entertainment (4 disk version)
- Pinball Fantasies CD³² (c) 1994 21st Century Entertainment (CD-ROM version)

hehe... no problem. So my version seems to be rare if not even WHDLoad supports the 3-disk-version.

I have a 3 disk version too (bought original years ago). It has the text printed directly on the disk (identical to the scan from whiteb).

Course Disk 3 must be 2 addional 2 tables then

Fiath, To close this thread once and for all, My A1200 is set up but hates to load it, loads all of PAL disk and asks for course disk 2, but goes no further.

So I booted good ole A500, and...... with the four disks, course disk 1 and 2 indeed have the 4 tables. When the game asks for "Any course disk" in 1 drive mode and I stick the 3rd course disk in the drive, it reads it but goes back to asking for "Any course disk". So i have no idea what the extra disk is for.. but very soon I will image the disks up and you can see whats on it.

[edit] I seem to remember playing with the WHDLOAD installer a long time ago and the finished result coming out with only 3 WHDLOAD images.... so maybe thye extra disk is UNUSED after all.

Could be. Don't forget that both are preserved anyway:

http://www.caps-project.org/games.php?search=fantasies

A different disk format, allowing them to squeze it onto 3 disks instead of 4 sounds very plausible. We have certainly seen it before. But I can't check right now.

Or, I suppose it could have been provided just to save hiscores...

Plausible, but CAPS says that 3 disk is OCS, 4 disk is AGA... where as I got a 4 disk version of OCS, on the A1200 it wouldnt load, got as far as "Insert Course Disk 2", instead of "Insert ANY Course disk", where as on the A500 it loaded 100% good (Cept for the course disk 3.

[edit] Fiath, whats the latest CAPS dumping disk ? I got Version 1.5, 06 March 2003 according to the accompanying HTML.
