Removing a Heatsink from an 040

I have got a new (quieter) fan for my 040. However I need to remove the heatsink that currently sits on the cpu. It seems to be stuck on with epoxy.

I have tried to yank it off but fear I may break the cpu.

I have also tried to make the cpu heat up so I can twist it off but no luck.

Any ideas?

heat will not work, it have opposite effect on epoxy

Try to stick it in the freezer in a static-proof bag for about 45 minutes, then lay a some cloth on your board to protect it and pry the heatsink off with a butterknife/screwdriver.
Naptha-based lighter fluid works best at cleaning off arctic silver.....

OK I really need to remove this heatsink as the new AteoBus move the expansion port about 1.5cm further in and the fan will now not fit.

If I remove the heatsink then I can put on a small cpu fan I have.

Does putting it in the freezer work? Is it safe?

Any ideas for removal?

You could always put a larger fan, say 80cm and mount it so it just blows in over the 040+heatsink. That would definately cool it down and will be a lot quiter as long as you don't get one of those hairdryer-fans.

Thats what ive been thinking but there is very limited room.

It would have to go underneath and blow up air but it would also have to be very powerful.

Can you recommend any smallish fans that are powerful enough to do the job?

What speed 040? I would just scavenge an 040 processor from an old Mac on the way to the dumpster and put a heatsink/fan on that.

The 040s in every old Mac I've seen so far have been socketed. Unless you find a Quadra 900 or 840AV, though, they're usually LC040s running at 33mhz or under.

I don't think that is what Smiley meant. The 040 CPU on most Phase 5 1240 accelerators on Amiga are soldered.
