A2000 mk2. the big bang
A year or so ago I sold off a 2000 . It was an early Rev 4.3 and worked flawlessy.
So, I've missed owning a 2000 since, saw one on here for sale so had to have her. I really like the 2000, they are built like a tank (literally), well made and easy to work with compared to a 3000/4000 (excluding technical limitations ) So the new one is a Rev 6.2 (last of the 'OCS' model before ECS was fully implemented on the 2000 line. She came with a GVP HC+8 (nice piece of kit) and has 2MB on board (I think). Done a bit of work on her tonight - mainly cleaning and chassis bending. Bit of greenery courtesy of the battery (had been removed when I got it) but will soak CPU and surrounding areas with some lemons when I come to fully cleaning the board... Noticed the case was bent - a common thing with 2000's and puts stress on the mother board bending it upwards . The only way to 'fix' this is to pull everything out - place case on floor and step on inside That's better More cleaning this weekend methinks. Need to check one of the disk drives over too as it's reporting errors when reading a disk (works fine in the other one)... but with my OCD for cleaning, I'll clean everything The LED holder on the front needs hot gluing in as the tabs that secure to the chassis have been broken at some point in its life. Still deciding on whether to goto town with this Amiga and pimp her out with an insane accelerator... my purchasing plans could bail out the Euro... Nice work mate
How about a GVP 040 Combo & a PicassoII? If you can find one a Thylacine USB would be good too |

I was highly tempted to take a picture of me standing inside it... must admit
Weird, GVP jumpers for the HC+8 card were set to 2MB but this thing has 8 x 1MB 30-pin simms. Will try it out over weekend and see what's what. Also has a nice surprise with a Guru ROM (v6.10). Steve, I am tempted with a 040 but half of me is saying to keep it stock'ish and revert to KS 1.3... I was thinking of a 060 in there but it ain't cheap |

Not much to report on.
Today I removed all IC's; cleaned and reseated and added a bit of lemon juice around the battery area - got all the green battery leakage off now and is in very good condition around that area. The 68000 was the main victim, I've soaked this in lemon juice but decided to purchase a fresh 68000 anyway. Waiting on a new 1.3 Kickstart ROM as well to finish the main board off. Just the Floppy drives to sort and cleaning the PSU out so this one has been an easy one... still not sure about the insane upgrades (yet ) |

Cheers chap
Gah, well, I ordered a new CPU which turned out not to be so new. The pins were bent really bad (one broken) so I've not used it and the old CPU now refuses to work (2000 boots up with just a white screen = CPU failure I guess soaking it in lemon juice sent it to the big CPU graveyard in the sky - it hadn't been used since the 13th dec so was pretty bone dry!... hmmm). So, another 68000 on order - this time a NOS Here's some advice - A2000 FDD mounting is a pain in the arse to get right, I need to reseat again as still not right after cleaning out both drives (both were dirty ~ so hopefully the one on the right which was throwing up read errors is cured now). PSU cleaning went well, just a bit of dust. Kickstart 1.3 is in there too (thanks Amigakit ) No pics yet but will do some when I get the 68000 sorted. Still undecided about accelerators... want to make sure this CPU problem is sorted before spending more £££. Oh, and I have a 2320 on the way here too Last edited by Paul_s; 30 December 2011 at 00:09. |

The computer was working fine beforehand - I did soak the CPU in some lemon juice though (the only chip I did that with due to the corrison on the legs). I could try it on my 500 I have but it's all wrapped up! If the new CPU doesn't arrive by weekend I'll dig the 500 out and do some testing

Nope, the CPU is working fine as I transferred all the A2000 custom chips to a working 500 as a test.
I've since found that one of the legs on the Angus socket has corroded and broken off! This means a new socket will be needed - so pretty sure the 68000 socket is OK. But would probably get it replaced anyway. Now I need to find someone who can repair her or buy a hot air workstation, Amigakit don't seem that interested - no reply to support ticket |

Ah no worries, got her up and running now
There's more info/diary here of what d0pefish did (turned out to be a duff Angus socket and he replaced the CPU socket as well for good measure!) http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=25862 Oh, and one of the power lines for the RGB was toasted but I managed to get that sorted easily enough. |
