Req: Atari ST version of Games: Summer Edition!
You may think I'm mad - why on earth am I requesting an Atari ST game?
While WHDLoad patching The Games: Summer Edition, I noticed that the game is trying to load a file called OLYRINGS.CMP after the title pic appears with the Epyx runner. On the original Amiga 2 disk version, this file does not exist. (And I assume the same happens on the crack). I went to Google and the Little Green Desktop and these sites (which are both down/busy/not allowing access) supposedly have the ST version of the game: megafile.atari.st (194.46.26.250) mindbomb.atari.st (217.162.104.83) However I couldn't get it. I was wondering if anyone on this board who has a huge collection of ST games could unpack this disk (I believe the file in question should be on disk 1) and tell me if the file exists on the Atari ST version. If it does, there is a very good chance that the file will work with the Amiga version of the game - so please upload! Good luck! May the force be with you... |

I couldn't find the file, but maybe Automation has packed everything and used a loader...
I've got another version, from SuperGau. It has a file named OLYRING.CMP (not olyringS.cmp). I checked the Automation and they have a "¶YRING.CMP". Is this the file? Anyway, it is in the zone. Last edited by Fissuras; 23 May 2002 at 16:43. |

Can somebody just upload that file for me?
Thanks for the uploads guys!
However (and I know jack about ST's!) I boot up Winston, put the disks in, try and locate that file and I can't see it - nothing comes up (I tried both sets of disks in the zone). The file I would have guessed is in the Opening folder or the root of the disk. Is the file set to hidden or is there something I have to do to see it as I copied all files on the disk and then tried to find it and nothing! |

DAISY BEE:- GRAPHICS \UNCLE ART:- MUSICÿ ÄÐ Ð \STGOLD.CMP ÄÐ Ð \LOADSCR.CMP ÄÐ Ð \OLYRING.CMP ÿ ÿÿ ^^^^^^^^^^ see? there is supposed to be a file named "olyring.cmp", but maybe packed inside a big file... |

Thanks!
OK thanks for looking guys, it seems that they either intentionally or mistakenly never put this file onto the ST or the Amiga version. Damn, almost had a 101% version of the game!
Fissuras: The part you are looking at is where the game tries to load that file rather than the file itself which is a shame. And none of the files are packed into other ones either unfortunately! Thanks for your quick responses guys, I'll try and get the WHDLoad version online shortly (just the stupid Hurdles event is causing me grief as it has access faults and every time I try and start, the runner takes off and does a false start! Grrr!) |

Maybe that is something that got commented out (or whatever they do) and left in the source, but the call for that file is never actually a part of the final executable? Maybe some portion of the game that wasn't finished in time for the publishing date and they had to just yank it? And left it in there in the event that they did get a chance to finish it for a later update? Just a thought.

Silly me. I should have thought this also. You are right, most other "CMP" file names appears twice in the file viewer... in the game program where it tries to load the CMP file, and in the disk file system... and olyring just appears once...
But it is funny they kept this missing file reference when they ported the game... and even changed a little bit the file's name (OLYRING <-> OLYRINGS). |

It's funny...I sift through a lot of binary executables looking for game information (dates, team members, devs, etc.) and will very often see references to data files that do not exist, so I figured this to be somewhat common.

It's also an indication of sloppy coding, IMHO
