A1200 keyboard membrane and isopropyl alcohol (99.9%) is not a good combo
So I was cleaning my A1200 keyboard. I took the keycaps off and thought it was a good idea to use a spray a load of isopropyl alcohol (99.9%) on it and give a good clean.
It certainly did give it a good clean. However, when I opened the keyboard to inspect the membrane I noticed that the the thin rubber-like layer had perished at the sides. I thought it was just because it was old. So I thought I'd clean it up...with some isopropyl alcohol - so I sprayed a load more on and started wiping it. Then I realised that more green membrane bits were coming off, so I stopped and just let it evaporate off. I put everything back together and it all seemed to work OK - the keys were working. A few days later, I noticed that actually the tab and caps lock were not working. I have tested the other keys but not these, as they weren't used that often. I opened it up and found that some of the traces for the Tab and Caps Lock key in the membrane had also perished. ![]() I've just ordered some conductive varnish to try to repair the damage, before resorting to buy a new membrane. So don't be an idiot like me and use isopropyl alcohol to clean your keyboard - specifically the membrane. |
