please help!! Apollo 1240 trouble...

Hi all, currently I have been running a taifun 1230 without fpu and 32mb of ram and decided I would buy a apollo 1240 card I saw advertised, but there is a bit of a problem and I would be so grateful if anyone can help me on this.

Basically the card I have is exactly the same as this:
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showha...cgi?HARDID=110

apart from mine doesent have the extra ram slot near the processor and the little silver block which is shown in the picture on that site (I think its a crystal its called??) is different, the one in the picture says 50.000 mhz 3XO-12C, whereas the one on my card reads EQZA 64.0 mhz EQXO-1100UC 9523. The only faults I can see with my card is possible on the scsi model chip? which is shown on that picture to the far right above the silver crystal thing and just below the main ram slot, also the crystal isnt flush to the surface of the card and is quite loose to the point of being easily removed.

The jumper settings are for 040 on ram on and scsi off.

When I first put the card in I tried it with the 32mb ram from my old 1230 card and seemed to load to the point of the workbench screen being displayed but then the green power light flashed and it rebooted a couple of times it got to the workbench screen and looking at the title bar it was showing the correct amount of ram however it crashed a few seconds after. I tried loading alien breed 3d up and it got to the main menu successfully but at the point of getting into the game it rebooted.

I then took that ram card out and put one of unknown size in that was sent with the card, nec ram it is. with that stick of ram the system did boot successfully and the amount of ram showed at 2 meg of fast ram, the system didnt reboot but occasionally the screen did flicker off and then back on but I have a feeling thats because my newly put in flicker fixer wasnt secured correctly at the back, I rebooted and loaded alien breed 3d and it worked fine and a lot faster than what I was used to.

My dilemma is, is it 1. the type of ram the apollo is sensitive to e.g make or brand or is it the card that is probably faulty? the processor on my board has a heatsink and fan and I am running a tower 1200 with psu. Is there anyone who can help Please????

Not PSU problems as you've got a tower. The Apollo is very picky about the RAM that you use. It could be an incompatible stick, or it could be just dodgy RAM.

The Apollo boards are very picky indeed. what other pieces of software have you tried? Just games and are this WHDload version? The Apollo has some compatiability issues with many WHDload titles.

I havent been able to try many whd games yet, it just seems to keep rebooting and crashing. What sort of ram is best to use with the apollo 1240?

Don't know about ram but are you sure the board isn't overheating? Maybe you should give the board a feel after its been on for a bit to see if it's hot.

And, is it possible that your 32Mb RAM SIMM isn't fast enough to cope with the faster processor?

As a user of Apollo 1240 @40 MHz, I suggest the following:
1)Try with a different SIMM
2)Be sure the SIMM is plugged in firmly, also do the same for the board itself over the A1200 mobo
3)I suppose that your 040 is a 25MHz one (it's written on it), the 64MHz crystal means that it's overclocked to 32MHz! Try replacing the crystal with a 50MHz one, I think that this should be your solution

I've allso apollo 040 40mhz, I haven't ever been problems with memory. SIMs should be atleast 70ns fast 60ns is better.

magnox mate, do you have any documentation on the taifun 1230 card at all ?

I have one, it works fine but i dont have any info on it (bought off ebay).

I've always wondered for ex. why does it halt and wait (with a black screen) for a timeout or a mouse click when powered on?.

Any help you (or anybody here) could give would be great.

here`s a possibility. what revision is your 1200 mobo as, ok please feel free here to quote me if i`m wrong with the revisions. but some boards i think it`s the 2b and another one, suffers from timing issues that the appollo boards especially with 040`s and upwards have probs working with, maybe this is another culprit to your probs.
