Hot GALs on 3660/3640s?
How hot should the gals get on an A3660 board (running with a 50MHz osc)?
They seem to be the hottest chips in my machine - I don't have a numerical temperature, but they are hot to the touch after a couple minutes of operation. Is this normal? Thanks! |

The GALs on my A3640 are hot to the touch as well. I have replaced most of them with faster versions when doing the waitstate mod, but I don't think the thermal situation improved in any significant way.
I guesstimate mine to be around 50-60°C, which should be comfortably within limits. Apparently 16V8s can tolerate up to 125°C during operation ![]() |

Are there any recommended tools for checking temperature? I have once searched for a FLIR camera, but I don't think I found something reasonable.

The TI PALs on some of them run quite a bit hotter than the Lattice GALs. Any measurements when the case are open will not really be accurate, since when the case is closed you will get airflow over them being pulled out by the power supply fan as jbenam says.
I checked some of them with an IR thermometer and they were over 150F, even hotter than the CPU. A better option if you are particularly concerned is to tape a thermal probe on them and closing the case. |

Mine get hot as well. I use the Microchip/Atmel 'C' types.
