A501 memory expansion advice

I've got a A501 commodore memory expansion and I'm wonder if:

Would it be easy/possible for an amateur (like me) to remove the old rechargeable battery and replace it with one from a PC motherboard? (coin holder)

As the old battery is a rechargeable! what coin battery could I use? as nearly all modern coin batteries aren't rechargeable. Or is there a simple hack to get around the recharging problem.

Check out amigakit for replacement batteries. You can buy battery holders that you solder to the board and slide the replacement battery into it. The old ones are relatively easy to remove, use flux to wet the area, heat up your iron and don't tug when trying to remove or you may lift a pad.

There are also rechargeable coin cells, like the ones used in some of the Blizzards. VL-2020 if I remember the type correctly. Would still have to check if the recharge characteristics match the NiMH battery close enough though.

Yes, but is better to put a diode to avoid a recharge on a non-rechargeable coin.

I did it some time ago, where are the schematics and photos:

my soldering skills were not the best :-) but it worked fine.
