Commodore 64 dead at a guess

I have come by a Commodore 64 computer. When powered on it comes up with a white square with black surround (I think) and a lot of squiggle in the middle like moving sprites. I am guessing this is fried?

Shame as its all boxed and came with a boxed floppy drive boxed tape deck and boxed joystick. Obviously cant test any of these if the above is broke.

Cheers

Hi Blast,

This may be of use Page 66 onwards

ftp://ftp.scs-trc.net/pub/c64/Tools/...pair_Guide.rar

and possibly this one. sounds like a ROM or PLA problem to me:

Ross.

Many thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at the screen again and maybe take a picture to post.

I do attempt minor repairs on any machines but if it gets more technical than screwing a few pieces in and out of involves soldering then thats probably not for me.

Cheers

Black and white sounds odd. Maybe you have a machine that doesn't work with your TV's video norm?

The messed up characters could be one of many things, probably a broken PLA chip. It could also be the Character ROM.
