Timidity Amiga

https://aminet.net/package/mus/midi/Timidity270

Is this the only option we have in order to play midi files on Amiga? Especially for games that support midi?

Was it ever updated to support ppc through warpup?

The source is available and GPL 2.

There were other attempts at MIDI but not portable open-source. CAMD.library is around if you have MIDI hardware but the software player requires OS4 last I knew.

Possibly relevant (you didn't exactly specify what you are after ):Timidity requires a 060 or faster for realtime playback.

The usual one is AmiTimidity http://aminet.net/package/mus/midi/AmiTiMiDity
The PPC executable here is just for converting the output to WAV, and the archive is broken so that doesn't work. But that'll get you a working set of instruments.
For the various PPC ports that have soft MIDI, mostly it just means creating a variable in envarc:
Like mine is ENVARC:TIMIDITY_CFG=devs:amidi/patches/timidity.cfg
If you are talking about a hardware synth over serial or MIDI ports, I can't off the top of my head name any PPC apps that support it.
Usually having CD Quality or OGG soundtracks were faster than actually using soft MIDI.
Exult_wos for instance yeah Timidity worked but the OGG soundtrack was more or less the same quality but faster.
I want to say at some point I released a simple command line player that I think played MIDI, MOD, and whatever else was built with SDL_Mixer in the Sonnet thread. Called Playmus-or something to that effect.

On my OS 3.1 setup, i can play MIDI files with
- Timidity with at least 68060 required
- GMPlay probably ok with 68030
- real MIDI expander connected to serial - MIDI adapter
For Sierra or whatever old games able to play MIDI music, only real hardware with serial to MIDI adapter should work.

Real expander >>> Timidity >> GMPlay

However, if you are talking about Sierra games and the like, most likely you are after the Roland MT32 which is a league of its own and not standard General Midi like GMPlay and Timidity.

MT32-Pi is the best solution really. Compatible with both MT32 and GM at low cost.
