This was based on the old RTG SDL, if anyone wants to have a go at an AGA port I know where to find an AGA compatible SDL

I tracked down the author and sent mail. He responded now we will see what he has to say.I was doing lot of coding for RedAlert but for PC and that was the only game I played constantly since 1996. I created 50MB version for PC for Aftermath only for network play with IPX network patches so it can support IP.

Yes it is possible but author said to me this.

It works only on RTG but with SDL AGA it may work on AGA. Maybe Novacoder will port OpenRA, which is much better than OpenRedAlert.

This Red Alert "port" slow as snail. It works but any classic setup lacks the horsepower. Would AGA SDL do any good here? Just wondering.

Hiya,

Most of these games do their own thing to build up the picture each frame and then just ask the SDL to display it so if the CPU is too slow to build up the picture then it makes no difference how quickly you can display it

These SDL ports are lot of work to get running well on Classics, you might be able to get them basically working in a few days but then you have to spend weeks to get the speed up to a playable level. Obviously it's because they are targeted at much more powerful machines than our Classics.

The only way to get these games to work well is to write a version by hand in assembler from scratch and optimize the hell out of it. Also, no external things like SDL and AHI, everything has to be native.

It's still great that people try to get these games to work, though. Sometimes it works out okay, sometimes it doesn't.
