Suffix codes, what do they mean?

I've noticed a lot of demos have a sqaure bracket with a letter and sometimes letter and number, for example:

Boings, The (19xx)(Leo Martin)[a]
Bomb (1992)(Melon Dezign)[b2]
Bomb (1992)(Melon Dezign)[b3]
Bomb (1992)(Melon Dezign)[b]

Why have three of the same demos (each with varying filesizes), each with a different code in square brackets at the end? Does anyone know what these, or any other suffix codes mean?
