Hi mate:
Sorry to say, but only your real friends can tell you. Do not use tape to change it black. Dismount it, clean it with some alcohol and just paint it black instead, it will look much better and you'll be happier. Last edited by Retrofan; 13 June 2017 at 03:03. |

I used black electric tape and it looks better then it does in the photos.I did it to my C64 compact and my Atari 130XE.The Amiga was panted White and had scratches on it so I found this easier to do.took about a hour and a half to complete.had to have breaks in between doing it cos of my arthritis in my left arm.it looks better for real.i see if I can get a better photo with the flash.the photos are spotty.i uploaded them wrong to Tapatalk.

You can buy a paint made for just for plastic. The results can be quite good if you spend time cleaning and preparing it well first. One thing about your method is that is it fully reversible and paint is not

Last time I did a black miggy I used a vinyl dye instead of paint:
http://www.vhtpaint.com/specialty/vht-vinyl-dye You can get it in gloss or satin, bonds well to the plastic. Results in a great finish. Cheers, Red |

Yep it reversible you just take the tape off and its back to the way it was..
Its like a jigsaw, you have to line up the tape so you don't see too many lines in it. Here are some more photos.. Yes I use bubble wrap, its cheap and you can see through it.. My C64 is on my Youtube channel.I have to re do my UK1541 case not happy the way it went.its to thick and not straight. Last edited by spannernick; 13 June 2017 at 17:21. |

Good call on using tape so that it's reversible. Painting it black is sacrilege in my book (I am a repentant sinner).

Especially after some time, the glue will become a problem, and getting it off the Amiga will be a pain in the ass, and basically ruin the case. You might be able to get it off now, months, a year after putting the tape on, but it will be a problem. Don't know exactly what type of tape you used, but this is terrible for the plastic in the long run. Not worth the hassle. Jesus I just noticed, how many computers have you done this to? And it seems to be electrical tape? That will get gunky in a year or so. |

The better the tape is, the worse it'll get on the long run.
You're old enough to know what you do, take my advice or don't, suit yourself really, it's your computers. |

Don't know if this is a joke thread or serious, but I'm intrigued.

Meh, I'd have gone the plasti-dip route if it was to be removable - that way you won't get the glue gunk issue a few years down the line. Insulation tape might be okay for a year or two, but it will become an issue at some point, no matter the quality of the tape.

I'll second what Mr. Fibble says. If you wanted removable then plasti-dip is the answer. Were the tape joins will always leave a visible line, but if your happy with it then don't pay any attention to us lot.

Is it me or do white/cream keys on a black machine really stands out like a sore thumb! If you are going black, go the whole hog imo!

I wished Akira and Mr. Fibble were wrong about the glue situation that emerges as time passes but unless the tape you are using has some pretty special properties that are different to other tape/glue combinations, then expect problems to appear in the future. When you do notice the start of the glue and tape separating, for goodness sake take it all off before it gets worse, I don't know what chemical reaction goes on with the glue but I remember tidying cables up by taping them up (before cable ties) and the resulting sticky mess that had taken place the next time I checked the back of my sound system
It sounds like a good idea at first, but as I mentioned if the tape starts to separate from the glue then remove the whole lot before all the glue turns your gear into a sticky mess that will take hours to try to clean up. Sorry for the negativity, in theory it sounds fine but in practice the chemical make up changes and everything just gets messy |
