Max Hard Drive Size

I know that there's a 4GB hard drive size limit with the Amiga, but is it still possible to use a larger hard drive (say 10GB) as long as I only format the first 4GB? I have a few 10GB drives floating around, but not many >4GB drives.

Formatting to FFS? Off the top of my head I think it's possible. If it doesn't boot try making the bootable partition 2gb.

I have found that the bootable partition can also be at the end of a 4gb drive. First partition Work, second bootable. (it was an experiment for a CF that wouldn't see the last part of the drive)

You can use any size drive up to 128GB if you use a different scsi.device and a file system such as PFS3.

The boot partition can be anywhere on the harddisk where it is accessible by the driver software which is available at boot time.

With an appropriate harddisk driver in ROM and a matching file system you can partition a 2TB drive into one large bootable partition.

You should look at the sticky threads before you begin to guess. http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=61666

I think were getting a little OT here. The OP has some 10gb drives he wants to use. Now we're talking 128gb to 2tb. WHOA

Not really off topic, he states that to his knowledge the size limit for hard drives is 4GB. That is not so, also he asks if it's possible to use a larger drive than 4GB, which it is.

This drive would be used with a GVP Impact II SCSI card, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

It makes no big difference, the biggest limitation is in the filing system used. FFS is best left to 4GB and under and for the boot partition, any bigger than 4GB use PFS3 or SFS. I'm not sure on the limitations of the GVP Impact II so do a search and look it up, however I use a GVP G-force 040 combo card in my A2000 which has a SCSI card similar to the Impact II and HD8+, that will read 32GB SD cards and 16GB Compact Flash cards through a SCSI card reader with no problems.

SFS is bad advice because it does not support SCSI any more, but PFS3 should work fine if you use pfs3ds or pfs3aio.

the new version of sfs is buggy and do not support direct scsi
but the old version support it you can use large partitions

anyways I recommend PFS3ds for the amiga for any partition any size
pfs3aiao was done by TOni willen but don't work fine here

Ok I'll have to look into pfs3aio. I've never used a different file system on the Amiga before, will WHDload work alright with it? Also, how do I actually use it? I assume it's before I format the hard drive.

It's not a bug. SCSI support was removed intentionally.

Download the full PFS3 archive from Aminet: http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/PFS3_53

Unpack it and view pfs3/data/eng/doc/pfs3.guide, it contains detailed installation instructions.

Then just use pfs3aio in place of pfs3 or pfs3ds. http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/pfs3aio

Some words of warning: Do NOT use Format on large harddrives, always use Quick format.

Trying to format a partition outside of the first 4GB of the harddrive will destroy data inside the first 4GB!

Use Quick, you have been warned.

I tried this, don't worked here in my A1200+80gb hardisk ..replacing pfs3ds by pfs3aio

I don't know why or where is the mistake, my pfs3ds partitions reports errors and refuses to boot
I end up surprised because pfs3aio was coded by the grand master
anyways I don't care because pfs3ds works like a charm
