Is me or the music bitrate is unusually high for being an ST? I admit not to know the STE hardware well, though

Technically i think 'Virtual Escape' ( [ Show youtube player ]) is breathtaking.

When turning off the sound, it feels like an Amiga demo. It makes you believe that no one needs a blitter, or bitplane pointers or a copper when you have a 68000

Thats pretty nice.

I much prefer this Amiga style of demo rather than the older ST stuff which did lots of different things on a single screen, I was never a fan of that style, but this demo shows some real flair, like you said, if you mute it, you would easily think it was an Amiga demo.

I kind of liked that, not artistically or technically perfect but I like it: [ Show youtube player ]

Check this out as well. Not an ST or STE demo but an Amiga Demo : [ Show youtube player ].

This is quite good as well: [ Show youtube player ] and this is, as the name implies, grotesque: [ Show youtube player ]

Although the tune is quite nice, the YM sound is like scratching nails on a blackboard.

What an insulting, toxic and disrespectful thing to say!

YM2149 is GREAT and it sounds wonderful in good hands! Any chip can sound bad in the hands of an idiot, so don't blame the chip, please.

You obviously haven't seen my thread where I defend this amazing sound chip - maybe in those demos, it might sound odd, but if you listen to what the chip can do in PROPER hands, maybe you'll change your mind.

Here:

http://sndhrecord.atari.org/mp3/Timbral/Junkie2149.mp3
http://sndhrecord.atari.org/mp3/Scavenger/Primus.mp3
http://sndhrecord.atari.org/mp3/Tao/..._Demo_8730.mp3
http://sndhrecord.atari.org/mp3/Cube/Back_To_Basics.mp3

Those are captured from real Atari ST, so no emulation used (could be a contributing factor to how you perceive the songs).

If you can listen to all of these and still not change your opinion about YM2149, then you are a lost cause and have no taste or understanding of sound, music or ability to appreciate something great.

Prepare some time for this, as Tao's masterpiece is pretty long 'medley' type song that goes through various styles and also showcases the YM2149's abilities nicely.

So please do yourself a favor and listen to these songs with open mind.

But the sound is the best part in my opinion.

Virtual Escape does indeed feel like an Amiga demo, though I don’t know if it would have any »classic« status if released on the Amiga.

There is no reason to overcompensate. The YM/AY chip is basically the cheapest and most primitive sound chip money can buy. There is absolutely nothing »great« about it, and whatever that comes out of it is purely due to the »good hands« of the musician using it.

Fighting hyperbole with hyperbole is rarely a good strategy.

Quite uncalled for.

I agree there are tunes that give glory to YM2149.
Having said that, please allow me the right to have my own thoughts and taste in music.
And I would like to return all the names you have called me. Keep them all to yourself. I don't even want to think what you'd say If I thought the tune wasn't "nice"

I like the virtual escape music but I'm a big Jochen Hippel Fan. The end music was remixed in 2009 by Moonove so you can imagine what it might have been like on Amiga.
