Question Need a small win98 prog, to open and close a directX screen...

I recenlty got a sealed copy of Montezuma's Return, a nice game
BUT
due to a bug (I assume) the 3DFX version does not start the game if you have a voodoo3 (that I have) , but there is a work-around... If you open a directX screen , or do something that opens a directX screen before the game, then it works flawlessly... I have no idea why is this, since it is a Glide game, but I suspect it uses directX to display the intro-video (that is where the 3dfx version hangs for ever, before it tries to play the video...) I have installed directX 8.1 and it works fine in all other games...
also there are NO patches, and I think I do have the last version, 1.23W (some others I saw on web where 1.19 , 1.11...)
So I am looking for a small prog to put it in a batch file, that it would run before the 3DFX version... preferably something that opens a screen and then quits immediatelly... anyone heared of such a prog?
thanks

Hi keropi,

I don't know if it works, but I think the programm in the attached zip-file is simple enough. Here a example batch to receive your effect :

start DirectXBoxUpAndDown.exe
wait 3
kill /f DirectXBoxUpAndDown.exe

'wait' and 'kill' should be Win98 compatible.
Hope this helps.

I'm glad it worked for you. The program looked so simple I thought it would run under DirectX 8, but it was linked with Direct X 9 API (stupid me ).

no probs TheCyberDruid , I think the drivers themselves are DX9 , that is why 8 was buggy...

So now the game runs without the 'workaround'? That's amazing.
I had to reinstall DirectX several times because of broken grafics and stuff. But I never had a game that won't start...
By the way : What kind of game is Montezuma's Return? An adventure or something alike?

P.S. : I googled it and found this. Just in case anyone is interested in the game like me now

yes, that is the one... basically feels like a first-person platform game! and nice too!
abandonia has an older release I think, my boxed NOS version came with only windows executable and it is version 1.29W ... just checked it... using the 3DFX version really rocks!
