Chaos Engine: Cannot trigger special attack

I am playing the Chaos Engine for first time as it was one of the games which I heard about but was unable to find when I had an Amiga in the 90s (here in the US it was very challenging to find Amiga games at retail).I am playing on an PAL A500 with ACA500+ and loading the game via WHDload and the Tinylauncher frontend. The game works fine but I can't seem to activate my special attack. Holding the fire button for two seconds (as specified in the manual) results in my guy standing still and firing non-stop. I know that some games exhibit weirdness under WHDLoad - or am I missing something about the controls? I expect that this is "user error" on my part but appreciate any assistance.

Thanks
Dave

Sounds like you have some auto-fire active. Check for a switch on your joystick.

Second button also works natively on that game AFAIR.

What a great game. I envy you as you're about to discover it!

You begin with no speical power... Special power is limited... You need to build your special power, grab these after you get the gold key in level 1

Your special power will increase. From here you can use your special power by holding the fire button down...

Also 2nd fire button is to change/swap your weapons

Thanks - this was the problem. My own "user error" as I expected. DId not realize that I needed to charge the ability first.

Thanks to all !

I wish I'd found a copy back in the day to play with my college friends. My area was a MS-DOS PC wasteland by that time. Placing myself in my early '90s mindset, I would have been floored by this game.
