The IP addresses of 30 guests all come from the same domain, so it looks like a load of bots scanning the board.

If they are bots, they all seem to be doing different tasks which must be ragging the server big time.

This is not a repeat of emu-uk is it? Attack of the bots?

The bot that attacked Emu-UK, registered and then cause grief.

However, I assume that will not happen here (or there again) as the image verification is being used.

Bots can do lots of things, but they can't look at an image

Taken at face value, they appear to be up to all sorts - quoting and editing posts, sending PMs, moderating, even playing in the Arcade. I remember reading something about Guests doing odd things before, although it was on a smaller scale: something to do with an 'echoing' effect?

Not that all this bot activity seems to be resulting in anything tangible. Especially for the one who is trying to beat my Snake high score. It's all in vain, bot. Give up now.

This guest flood was generated by one scanning system like googlebot, but less more friendly.

All the ip of those spiders was banned from abime.net network

Mostly it's a good thing to let bots spider the forum because then it will show up on more search engines and increase traffic and the member count. Spiders mindlessly follow links so it will appear that they're up to no good but usually it's nothing to worry about. Other bots are currently scouring the net for copies of copyright protected text or comparing student's coursework etc against online documents. Then there are bots which are unleashed onto the net for data gathering/research purposes. Those are just a waste of bandwidth and can be blocked.

My forum has been indexed at www.boardreader.com for a while now and it's bringing in a lot of new members. This is the Google of the forum world. If the info you require is out there on an UBB or vB forum Board Reader will track it down.

Hmm, good point. So did you manage to identify where they were coming from and what they were up to? This kind of info would be much appreciated on the vB support forums if the same idiot is doing the rounds on other boards.

I had an auto-register bot prowling around once. It managed to sign up for an account and then spam every forum with the same message. Luckily the new vB beta now supports fuzzy image verification if you know what I mean. I'm sure there must be a technical term for it, but I can't remember what it is. Are you planning to wait until the final version is released before upgrading?

The spiders seem to be from http://www.hotbot.com/

All the guests came from the domain j3150.inktomisearch.com - Inktomi is mentioned on this search engine.

I beleive Inktomi provides caching services to many customers, they use something like a Squid server to cache web data almost like regional web server mirrors. It's possible they are using a more non-friendly bot to spider up the info now but I bet going to inktomi directly you maybe able to find out and possibly have them stop doing this to your domain

Ah, that's a familiar one. I've noticed lots of people have reported Inkomi bots swarming all over their forums recently. Apparently it's deep crawl day for lots of search engines. Odd that they've all chosen to do it at the same time, but I wouldn't worry since they're a reputable company. There isn't necessarily 50 or however many different bots scanning at once, they could just be switching IPs and creating new entries with each page view.
