Can you Split an ADF and size issue
Hi guys,
Im trying to download Turrican II, move it across to my Amiga, and then write it to a floppy. I already have the game, but im wanting to do this simply to learn the process. Theonly way of moving from PC to Amiga that I know and have the stuff for, it via floppies and CrossDOS. So, I downloaded the ADF of the game, and it's 880kb... Then, I used HJ Split which has a Windows and Amiga version, to split it into 2 440KB parts, transferred it to my Amiga in two parts, and successfully joined them together using the amiga version of HJ Split and saved them to HDD. However, I do not think that when they re-joined, them joined as a .adf - Is there a way to check this? I already have TransADF in C and downloaded TransADF GUI to use it through (moving it across via CrossDOS), and the Turrican image which I joined together on My Amiga does not show up to write to disk, which makes me think that it didn't re-join as a .adf file. |

what Amiga do you have ? A500 or A1200 ?
If you have an A1200, a compact flash as removable media on the PCMCIA port and an ADF imager is the right thing to do also, once rebuild, you need to rename the file to *.adf before writing it back. |

Im more wanting to do it to see if it works. When I re-join them the file has a picture of a hammer on it... Basically, what your saying is I just needs to re-name it and add .adf on? |

Oh yeah - How would I write it back to floppy when its 880kb and the floppy is only 720kb?
I dont understand how it can actually be 880kb as when it was released, it fit on 1 disk! PS - Im fully aware that this is a 2-disk game. Im just talking about the first disk here. |

what ADF writing tool are you using ? Also please note that the amiga formats in standard double density disks as 880kb. being 720kb doesn't matter for us

With regard to the file size, your saying I can put the Turrican II 880kb file onto my DSDD 720kb disk? |

Workbench provides a default icon (hammer symbol for a tool) if none is defined. For an icon to be defined, it needs an .info file which you don't have, so ignore the icon.
The raw capacity of the floppy is much larger than 720kb. When formatted on a PC, it has 720 kB available for files, on an Amiga this is 880 kB. Using a non-standard format you can squeeze just over 1 MB on a DD floppy. Some originals use this, both for space but also as a copy protection measure. |

Ok, so I added a .adf to the end and transadfGUI found it ok, however, now when I choose the file and select 'write to disk' (already having a blank amiga formatted floppy in the drive), all it does is re-format the disk rather than write the adf to it?

It should write the ADF while formatting the disk.

Do you use this via a shell prompt or something? Nothing much happens when I double click the file?
I haven't any experience using program's which do not have a GUI. |

adf2disk is command line yes, but is easy to use from WB. When you double-click an adf file a requester opens with the name of the adf file already filled out. Simply add 'adf2disk ' in front of the filename and press enter (after putting adf2disk in c: ) and it will write that adf to df0:.

just the 'adf2disk' file. That way you can use it from anywhere. In cli you can simply type 'adf2disk cf0:filename.adf' to write filename.adf from the cf card to the disk.

Just tried it and got the following -
Diskimage must be 901120 bytes Adf2disk failed return code 20 So, I think maybe the Turrican 2 image is too large for the floppy? When I right click and go to information on the Turrican 2 image it says its 952589 bytes so that's maybe what's wrong so I'll try a new download of the game. Thanks for your help. |
