Major problems using Gotek USB drive
Hi there,
I've successfully flashed a GOTEK USB drive via Win XP. With Win7 the device wasn't recognized. The flashing process went without any error at last. After disconnecting any cables for flashing from the drive i've connected the GOTEk to my A500. (Rock Lobster Board / Rev. 6A) The GOTEK toastet my USB Stick and my USB HUB when i powered my Amiga. What went wrong here? It was flashed absolutely correct with the latest .HEX file v1.05 and it showed no error, verify was also correct. Maybe i did not connect it correctly to the Amiga?! in which direction should the data cable / power cable be connected to the GOTEK? Can a wrong direction of the cables be the cause of this? The LED display shows "- - -" with and w/o an USB stick attached to the GOTEK. What should it display w/o an USB stick? Any advice here? |

USB HUB?? How does that figure into connecting it to an Amiga?

I don't think they are meant to be used like that. Maybe the hubs faulty.

It toasted my USB stick without the hub. I used it as IT should be.

What I fail to understand is, What's the hub got to do with a gotek? What were you trying to achieve?
Did you fry the USB stick and then thought, "I'll try a hub"? or fry the hub and then fried the usb stick?? or fried the hub with the usb stick together?? |

Well without a usb stick inserted you do get 3 dashes. With a stick inserted from first use you get 000. So if you're only getting dashes either the goteks busted or the usb stick is. Have you other sticks to try?
If you have a multimeter you can check the Goteks usb pins for voltages higher then 5v. |

I'll check the voltages as soon as i find my multimeter.

you get "---" if an incompatible stick is inserted... does the stick work at all in other devices?

I think if the data cable was the wrong way around you would get a flashing power light constantly and no kickstart boot screen.

I've got a KS screen, the green LED on the GOTEK was on (not flashing) and the GOTEK display says "- - -"

That means your data cable is correct and the problem must be with your USB stick. I get the --- display when I have no USB inserted so yours isn't being detected. You did put the selector.ADF onto the stick I assume. (Silly question I know)

Just hope you don't plug the 4-pin power connector backwards and ended up feeding 12V into the device. (I have only seen the schematic.)
The drive itself has a 3.3V regulator, so it is (sort of) protected, but the 5V goes directly into the USB port, so the USB stick can get fried seeing 12V. There can be other reasons, but this is possible. You can check the USB stick on a PC and see if it get recognized. Also make sure it doesn't get abnormally hot. (a sign of damage) |

Ok... this is what happened, i think. (I've tried different cables ) I connected a 4 wire cable, although i did not know that there are 2 diffenternt voltages. Hope the GOTEK is not busted, because i just had it some seconds online to test it. As the GOTEK only needs 5V and ground i try to connect the poer an ground line from the amiga board. Which is the 5V and ground pin on the Amiga board?! Can you help me here? Last edited by Melroc; 25 October 2014 at 15:53. |

The Amiga motherboard power connector is wired for a PC style floppy drive and so is the Gotek.
The *correct* cable should connect the same pin numbers on both side together. i.e. pin 1 to pin 1 and so on. (aka a "straight" cable) The connector is keyed and it should only go in one way. You really shouldn't messed up unless you were making your own cable and rotated the pinout 180 degrees on one side. Pin out - See attachment. PCB labeled, table for pinout, PC floppy power connector on the side for colour. You were lucky as like I said before, there is a 3.3V regulator in the floppy, so the circuits are some what protected. Last edited by K.C.Lee; 25 October 2014 at 16:57. |

yeah looks like you had that weird looking power connector on backwards, what is that? a pass through with 3 black wires at the top of the pic? if so, red would probably be 5 volt, the one opposite *should be* 12v and yellow in colour.

Ah... thank you.
Will it be enough to connect the 5V and one ground pin to the corresponding pins on the GOTEK? I have a 3-wire cable here and i will cut one line. This should do the work, i think. Not perfect - i know. |
