It was common in IBM's and Mac to have battery outside motherboard, usually battery, sometimes very large (like double 6F22) with wires, battery was hold by velcro (hook-and-loop fastener self adhesive stripe) - even my Thinkpad has battery not mounted on motherboard but hooked with pair of wires, you can also try to use large coin battery (like CR2050 or even bigger like CR2450..CR2477)
