'best' serial.device replacement?
Hi all,
Just wondering which serial.device people would recommend for an A1200 with KS 3.0? I've had a look on Aminet and there's about a dozen different serial.device replacements, but which one would be best suited for null modeming files from the IBM to the Ami? I looked in the FAQ as well, but there's no mention I could see of replacement serial.device files anywhere (to get >19200 baud transfers). Is there an 'Amiga for Dummies' or equivalent that goes through which files are recommend to have in your C, DEVS, SYSTEM etc. etc. directories - where to find them etc. etc.? ie: a 'must have' pack of system utilities, crunchers, disk utils, libraries etc.etc. |

also, how do I please set the serial port speed to something faster than 31500 baud? There is lots of talk on here about using null modem between IBM and Amiga at 57600 baud, but I tried the 8na.lha from Aminet and it still only had a maximum speed of 31500?
Which replacement serial.device file should I try please? (one to be added to the FAQ?) BTW: I'm using Amiga Explorer on the IBM to browse to the Amiga, I just want faster than 19200 baud transfers (less waiting). Last edited by gizmomelb; 13 December 2005 at 15:40. |

Iirc baudbandit.device is much faster than serial.device on a 68000 amiga.

Back when i used serial on my amiga, i found ArtSer serial device the fastest/stable and had no issues maxing running at 115200 baud. I did get the Twister A1200 serial port eventually though to maxout my modem at 230400 and leave much more cpu power free for the browser.

Baud is not bits per second.
the serial prefs program doesn't really tell you the speed the serialport is capable of. 8n1.device is what I've used, up untill I got a SurfSquirrel with a 230.400 bps serial port.....8n1 works just fine..... I would recommend, dualboting the PC into win98 and use PC2Amiga for transfers. The PC acts as what it was always supposed with PC2AMiga.....a SLAVE ![]() |

ok, I just found a very good 'Amiga Explorer for Dummies' guide, with mention of increasing the speed of the serial ports for faster transfers at this location:
http://forums.pimprig.com/showthread...oto=nextoldest possibly a cut and paste (or at least a link) for the FAQ? |

At one point I had Baudbandit.device with a 56k modem, set to a throughput speed of 115k (so it took full advantage of datacompression) and the A500 didnt hickup (for me). |
