980k format

I recently found some disks back from around 1994 which were formatted in 980k format. I did a lot of digitizing those days with my Vidi Amiga I had. There are some pics on it of family who are not with us anymore. So I would be very happy if I could read this disk back in to hd.

What I am looking for is the hack/tool/library/commodity that makes it possible to put some extra data on a disk : Instead of 880 kb you can put 980kb on a disk.

Does somebody have this tool or knows the name ??

they were probably done with DiskSpare device on aminet, that used to allow quite a bit more on a floppy...

you will need it to read the disks, best thing to do then is just archive the files, don't bother preserving the actual floppy images...

Not entirely clear on the problem. If it's just a case of getting them copied back onto your Amiga HD then severin is the man because I've never used this 980K Amiga format software.

If you want to get the files across to your PC (since you mention 720K PC formatted disks rather than 880K Amiga disks) then you'll need to compress the files using zip or use a cross platform file splitter like chunker on Aminet.

880k disks are standard FFS format. You just need an Amiga with Kickstart 2.x/3.x and a normal floppy drive to read them.

Well ofcourse I know that !! But as mentioned above I am looking for a tool that formats disks in 980kb format. (I think I remember it does this by fomatting extra tracks on the disk )

ANd Diskspare is not what I am looking for...

hmmm, yes I can see now that disk spare isn't what you want, it lets you format a floppy to 984k NOT 980k

Once you have installed and mounted the DS0: dos driver ANY good format program (even workbench's) will do the job, just remember to format DS0: not DF0:...

Just writing extra tracks won't work without a device driver to read them, they will either be ignored or the disk reported as bad...

There is a slight problem with Diskspare!

I had alot of stuff backed up with DS, and then one fateful day my HD went down.. so I dug out DS and installed it.. but my disks couldn't be read..

That is because it was updated and the coverdisk I got the original DS off had vanished

If it doesn't work with the DS from aminet, hunt down AUI magazines as it used various different versions over a period of time!

Sorry, I mis-read the posts, but I wasn't the only one who felt confused

You need to search for trackdisk.device replacements. Besides diskspare, I found these on Aminet in a brief search:

hackdisk

I'm sure there are a heap of others on Aminet as well as the web. Unfortunately, it might take some time for you to find the right one.

The other thing that occurred to me is that perhaps older versions of diskspare may have formatted disks to 980k rather than 984k that the latest version does.

I am pretty sure DiskSpare has always been 984Kb.

Really ?!? ... Dammit ... You've just provided an explantion for me as to why some of mine appear to not read back .. Thanks .. I shall go look up the AUI version.

I just thought the disks had maybe lost the plot .. Glad i didnt bung em.

There are two DiskSpare formats. The first used the standard 80 tracks and formatted disks to (I think) 980K. The second formatted one extra track to provide a bit more space.

Amiga User International (AUI) used to distribute their coverdisks formatted with DiskSpare. However, they only ever used the 80 track format, because apparently there was a possibility that some disk drives couldn't read disks formatted with 81 tracks.

There is an option in the DiskSpare mountfile to change the number of tracks it uses.
