Amithlon Setup Guide

Mods feel free to move if there's a better place...

Having witnessed the mind-bending frustration of another forum member while trying to install Amithlon onto their system.
To name but a few understandable comments!
-did you get there in the end?-

I came the the conclusion that it's MUCH harder than I remember. ( Isn't memory a funny thing? )

So...
I've spent the last few days assembling a guide to installing Amithlon.
The first release should be available in the next day-or-three and I'll post a link to files on this thread.

Why..?
Amithlon is great! ( Once you get it working )
Honestly, you've no idea what our favorite OS is capable of without good RTG, AHI, and the equivalent of a ghz 68040 to back it all up. Never mind access to modern / useful stuff like USB devices etc...

And why..?
It seems 'other guides' are lacking a 'certain something', like: 'I've never installed Amithlon before, please explain what you're on about and stop making assumptions.'
'BTW: Where do I go to get the files and ( many ) updates that seem to be scattered over the entire web?'
Don't worry:
My guide explains it all in life-sapping detail. Also I've pulled those hard to find updates, drivers, etc into one place, AND added a few pre-made files of my own to help over the tricky bits.

Please note this software is not 'free'. You need a boxed set to legally use Amithlon.*
*according to some sources it was never fully kosher in the first place!
- Another glorious debacle courtesy of A(_._).STinc -

The first release will be a bit rough.
Feedback would be appreciated. Further questions, fine.
It will be improved greatly ( pretty .pdf's etc ) if there's interest...

Don't have a copy of Amithlon to hand? Take a look anyway, you may feel moved to find one.

*Edit*
First draft done:

Cool stuff Charlie

...thought it was best to move your thread here from the News section so it's located with other useful guides.

Good points, This is exactly what Linux users do for Linux noobs like me:

"It seems 'other guides' are lacking a 'certain something', like: 'I've never installed Amithlon before, please explain what you're on about and stop making assumptions.'"

Thank you, go for it!!!
I also have an Amithlon copy waiting for the time i gain proper knowledge of its installation details. I love the concept behind your aproach "It seems 'other guides' are lacking a 'certain something', like: 'I've never installed Amithlon before, please explain what you're on about and stop making assumptions."
It just suits me perfectly

Ok, the first version is done.

..:Here's the link:..
->Amithlon Guide<-
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

This has turned out to be much longer ( and bigger ) than I expected.
I suppose that's the penalty of trying to be as 'complete' as possible.

I hope it proves useful to lots of peeps. ( converts are always wellcome )

Please look on this as a first draft - comments and suggestions appreciated.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the feedback - I've already got some thoughts for the next release.

I'm also @ the early planning stage for an AmigaXL guide.

Why..?
Well I know it's less popular than Amithlon.

So why..?
It's almost as quick. ( You'll only notice with benchmarks )
Has working VM. ( In case 512mb isn't enough for an Amiga )
Based on QNX there's wider compatability. ( Esp as Gary hasn't done an update to Amithlons Kernel in ages )
As QNX is modular I should be able to do a stripped-out Amithlon-esqe version.

Don't hold your breath.

Gary - where are you? Please keep up the good work!

If Gary's gone does anyone who hates Linux less than me feel like taking a look @ the sources & continuing the updates for Amithlon?

Charlie's guide was really useful, have a fully working Amithlon enviroment with OS3.9 + quite optimized patched so far
OS3.9 runs about as quick on my 1ghz PIII as MorphOS on my Peg II...not as smooth as MorphOS which is completely native

A big thanks goes out to charlie who helped me along the way

@charlie

a nice little QNX - AmigaXL would be awsome... and perhaps the methods required to get warp3d working on there too

Ahhh - Warp3D - hmmm, speedy.

Tips:
Voodoo3 PCI.
From memory:
Open W3D installer & open the Voodo3 specific files in a good hex editor & alter the id-numbers refering to 'kosher' Amiga PCI bus for those reported by PCIList in Amithlon.
-As easy as that!-
-Hyperion won't be happy-

As an alternate:
QNX has OpenGL.
This Chap Has done an OpenGL Warp3D wrapper for WinUAE

I'm hoping a little 'gentle badgering' may persuade him to do a QNX verion...

Just read it

I tend to agree with you.....UAE doesn't feel like a real Amiga...Amithlon makes you believe you're actually running your beefed up Amiga but it has got some more muscles
And it's a perfect method for breathing some Amiga life into your old PC

Agree with you on the linux bit, although I'm a UNIX user (MacOS) I don't like it..it's not very user friendly...had a battle with it yesterday when I tried to get my damn ATI Radeon XT800 Pro working in MacOS X86 on my PC....you have to be a mad professor and follow some crazy guides on how to get some usable screenmodes

grub error 28

I've followed the instructions, but get tripped up on GRUB. I have edited MENU.LST to conform to my hard drive (hd0,1) (my 600 mb amithlon sys is the 2nd partition on the disk). Grub can find the kernel and boot disk images, but gives the following error:

Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory

The system has 512MB of ram; grub reports 638K lower, 490432K upper memory.

I got that error, only have 384mb RAM so I edited the MENU.LST to 384mb instead of 512mb on the kernel launch command and then it works
