Backup and restore cf image

Hi all

I have been trying to backup and restore an 8gb image. Both cards are transcend CF 8gb x133.

What is the best method?

I have tried WinImage but I get error 27 at 99% when flashing image to the second cf drive.

Any help is appreciated.

The target card must be equally sized or larger than the source card. Equally means exactly equal, not a single sector less.

Hi Thomas

Yes I was aware of this. I didn't get time to check the exact sizes of both cards yesterday. Hopefully I'll.get time today.

Assuming the target drive is a tad smaller, what would be the best approach to replicating my original CF card?

If dd can't do it, nothing will.

For backup and emergency restore I use hddrawcopy (I think it is).
Dont think it can shrink stuff though.

Ok, thank you.

I have had a look at this and may be worth a shot. A google search came up with several hits. Do you know which is the official site?

It depends on how the source card was partitioned. If it was fully covered by partitions up to the very last sector, then it cannot be written to a smaller card. If a few sectors in the end of the card were unused then you can write the image to a card which covers the used sectors. The error at the end can then be ignored.

To replicate the image contents to a card smaller than the used area of the image your only choice is to create new partitions on the new card, mount both in WinUAE and copy the files over.

Ok, thank you Thomas. I thinking I will have a go in Winuae.

Is it just a case of copying files over or do I need to install things, such as wb 3.1?

There are no hidden files or other magic in AmigaOS. So yes, you can just copy all files.

Best use a Shell prompt or a directory manager (like DirOpus or DosControl or similar) to do the copy. Workbench is not really a file manager but rather a strange kind of start menu.

Ok, great. I'll have a look at doing this with DirOpus in Winuae.

I'll get looking youtube for tutorials.

Cheers you lot, once again some great advice!
