Failing Hard Disk
I have a dead A500Plus upstairs with an external hard disk unit, which slots in the side. The hard disk in my A600 is starting to fail and I was wondering if it is possible to use the A500 plus external hard disk in my A600 internally.

Backup your files as soon as you can. :eek
Is that an A590 or a GVP unit? I'm not sure about GVP but you can't do that to a HD inside an A590. A600 supports ide drives and A590 SCSI and XT ones. As you may have read, I recently killed an A590, just by connecting it to a kick2.0 machine. Did you have any such experiences? Can you suggest any tips? |

What I was thinking was, if I unscrew this box and take the HD out and swap with the 20 meg hd in my A600. Quote:
The HD worked 100% when the 500Plus worked. The A500plus HD unit is fine as it spins up. Other bad news My 1meg addon card is playing up. It only shown 1 1/2 mb and not 2mb. Last edited by Paul; 10 February 2003 at 13:24. |

A590 doesn't have a switch, it can't be one then.
edit: you're too fast |

If these units are like the the other GVP ones then it most likely with have a 3.5" HD installed and not a 2.5" (Laptop) HD like you need for mounting inside an A600

This is a picture I found when searching the net
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/gvphd+.html It looks too complex. I think I'll leave it alone and hope my A600 will last a bit longer. Don't want to risk being without an Amiga all together. Thanks anyway. |

Don't use the drive from the GVP unit! It's SCSI and won't work.
Best bet is to look on ebay for a 2.5" laptop drive, pay no more than £20 - £35 for between 1 and 4GB. Use HDToolbox to partition it when fitted. Once partitioned/formatted it's possible to get a 44way 2 drive cable to transfer the data ==> but don't delay backing up <== |

Syko is right, your GVP unit would have a SCSI drive, whereas your A600 needs an IDE drive, so you cant put the drive from the GVP into your A600. Best bet is to get a laptop IDE drive. Btw, what makes you think that your IDE drive in your 600 is dying, is it having trouble spinning up?

Requiem Mass for Paul's drive controller unit It has ceased to be, it has run up the curtain and joined the choir eternal. It is an ex-controller. All donations greatfully received. No flowers by request. |
