Looking for high quality 64-pin DIP/DIL socket for my Amiga project
Hi,
I am about to build a A500++ board and I am looking for the highest quality/most reliable sockets for my ICs. I see that most people who build these boards use the round hole machined sockets instead of the kind that the original Amigas used. I will probably use high quality dual wipes instead because they are better suited for the job and it is easier to remove or replace ICs without damage to the pins. I have found that all socket sizes except the 64 pin socket used for the Motorola 68k CPU is readily available as high quality brand name parts. Do any of you guys know where I can purchase a brand new high quality 64 pin dual wipe socket for my project? |

What I am looking for is reliable high quality brand name parts. Preferably available from European resellers since I am located in Sweden but if it is impossible to find in Europe I might consider buying elsewhere. |

Let me know if you find some....
Maybe you can use 2x 32 pin sockets. These are perhaps better available than 64 pin. |

Make sure they have 22.86 mm row pitch and 2.54mm pin pitch. Based on the reviews those aliexpress dip64 are 1.778mm pin pitch, won't fit.
Here are two quality options but with turned pins: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/dil-sockets/0813200/ https://www.reichelt.de/de/en/ic-soc...64p-p8228.html |

If you want high quality don't get them from aliexpress.
Only from digikey/mouser/rs/arrow/reichelt etc where you can see the datasheet and the material used for the contacts and can be sure you are getting the real deal. These are the ones I use: https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/dil-sockets/0813200/ Oh one other point - most accelerators that sit in the 68k socket these days use round pins. Using turned pin sockets will get you a much tighter fit if an accelerator inevitably gets installed. If sticking with a regular DIP 68k then dual-wipe sockets are okay. After switching to turned pin I've never looked back. Last edited by dalek; 02 February 2021 at 22:13. Reason: update |

Yeah, they're the same ones I use from RS too (813-200), and they're very good quality. Similarly, I only buy parts from proper suppliers where I'm sure I'm getting good stuff, and if there's ever a problem, it's easy to sort out. Buying from Ali Express is reserved for parts I can't find anywhere else.

Maybe I should reconsider using turned pin/machined sockets. They are easier to find. I have to think about it. At this moment I have no plans for any accelerators but you never know... |

Exxos has some available on his shop. I have had one in the past and it's a good quality turned pin socket.
https://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/store2/ I also have about 19x sockets here for various projects. Unfortunately I can't provide a link as looks like they were leftover new old stock and no longer available. Shame as I wanted some spares. |

Maybe this one then? I don't know but seems to be the correct pin pitch and has dual wipes. Only rated 1A max though, I think an old 68000 cpu has power consumption of around 1.5W at 8MHz and current about 0.3A, but if you are going to plug-in an 060-accelerator in that socket you may have to think twice.
