ideal partition size
I'm wondering what is the ideal partition size for a 3.1, 3.5, or 3.9 installation?

There is no ideal partition size. There is only a minimum requirement. I think for 3.1 it is 2 MB, for 3.5 10 MB and for 3.9 the installer checks if there is 20 MB free space and refuses to install if there is less.
From there on you have to decide how much additional software and stuff you want to install to the system partition and then choose the size accordingly. Partition sizes also strongly depend on the size of the hard drive. If you have a 40gig drive, a 2 MB partition can hardly be spotted on the diagram in HDToolbox. So you'd probably make the system partition 1 or 2 gig or more. On the other hand, with a 64 MB CF card, space is tight so you'd probably go next to the minumum or even make only one partition covering the entire drive. |

To me the ideal size is the maximum you can make. I hate dividing my disks with partitions. Thank goodness PFS3 doesn't become unvalidated. :-)

I think I have 250MB dedicated to Workbench and most used apps, with the rest going to Work, on a 2GB CF drive. I like having partitions, keeps things in order.

I generally make a WB partition of 100mb and have a Work partition with the rest. I like to keep the system files seperate from my own files, and if you ever need/want to reinstall WB in the future, it makes things much easier.

Partition size
Except in OS 4.1, recovery and optimization programs (DiskSalv, QuarterBack Tools, ReOrg, etc.) won't work on partitions greater than 4GB. If you have a multiboot system, keep all of you boot partitions within the FIRST 4GB of the hard drive.

Multiple partitions are safer. If one of partition gets trashed the other will still be okay. Put all your eggs in one basket and they could all get broke.

I think two partitions are minimum and with very large HD size more become useful. Bootpartition should be as clean as possible but it is commonly known.
