Darkseed flickering

The game Darkseed (which runs in interlaced mode) flickers a lot at start and when you have to enter something from keyboard in general (e.g. password protection, Quit from menu Y/N).
Tested WHDLoad version.

Context seems to be missing. Flicker more or less than some other version? How does this relate to 4.0 betas?

EDIT: Darkseed has quite special interlace mode, it looks bad/wrong if any kind of interlace helper/fixer is enabled. Fields+ mode probably works the best but also flickers like real interlace.

I have no fixer patch tool. With very old version 2.5.2 it didn't flicker at all in Line mode: Double... Now I have to find the WinUAE version when it started I'll post results tomorrow.

Ok, tested many WinUAE releases... It started with 3.5.0. WinUAE 3.4.0 was the last one without bad flickering.

Hi Hexaae.

I wrote here about it.
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=87145

It was Fixed by ROSS and tested by me ,Nibbler

Just copy it to youre HD, there is no need for WHDload with this game,
because it runs native from HD, the copy protection is removed and it´s AGA fixed. Works for all Languages !

Greetings, Nibbler

Is the interlace issue only with WHDLoad version? I couldn't see any problem running it from floppy disk (Quartex cracked version).

@retrogamer: Sure, but why? There is not really a need for a WHDLoad version imo.

@mark k: The OCS version has Interlace, theAGA CD32 release not. WHDLoad dosen´t matter.

*but i am only talking about real hardware; your experience in WinUAE can be different*
(you know, because of all the video scaling options´ n stuff)

You´re Welcome

ROSS is really the best.

Please enjoy Darkseed. I know its not the best adventure but the atmosphere and the H.R.GIGER Artwoks are fantastic.

I know the game like the back of my hand after playing through all the languages multiple Times hehe

Greetings, Nibbler

If you have the opportunity to go to "Gruyère" (in Switzerland), you should visit the Hans Ruedi Giger museum. Just in front of it there is a bar where you can enjoy some drinks being sited in "Alien" seats.
Then you can go for a Swiss cheese fondue in the restaurant "Le Châlet de la Gruyère" (I am in no way affiliated with them, just enjoy going there sometimes ).

Concerning Darkseed, I tried it back in '92 but never really played it. Your enthusiasm about this game makes me think I will give it a better try.

@Nibbler
Thanks!
A fixed WHDLoad version with vertically centered screen would be great too... I've already added a request at WHDLoad Mantis. Maybe ROSS could help WHDLoad team rewriting the slave?

@Toni
News? The WHDLoad version was running fine and without flickering at all up to WinUAE 3.5.0.
Here is it with WinUAE 2.5.1 NTSC mode:

Both Versions center the Screen vertically; at least on real Hardware.

I cant speak for WinUAE because there are so many Screen/scaling options,
it may be different, depending on youre Video setting in WinUAE.

Hi Nibbler, hi malko

@hexaae: there is some reason for a WHDLoad version for this game?
I do not remember exactly what I had done, but it seemed to work in all configurations.

Hi Ross

I tested both of your versions on the lastest WinUAE and the where all vertical centered. Why there is a need for a WHDLoad version is beyond me.

WHDLoad is awesome, but for games that have a native HD install and should work on all amigas its useless imho.

I mean, i would never install for example Lionheart from Thalion
via WHDLoad. It dosent make sense.

Anyway, like i said, both Ross versions (Floppy & CD) are perfectly fine in WinUAE. (i play normaly on orginal hardware)

The only thing is
that the Talkie version stays black when you want to exit Darkseed.
But if i remember correctly,
that happends even on the CD32 and is no big deal imho.

Anyway. Hope you can enjoy it.
Greetings, Nibbler

Could you attach the WinUAE config you're using? I tested the floppy version with WinUAE 3.6.1 and 4.0.0b5. I didn't see any flickering there, BUT...

There seems to be an incompatibility between the game and Kickstart 3.1. With Kickstart 3.0 or earlier it's fine; the interlaced display appears correct.

But with Kickstart 3.1, instead of odd/even lines being shown in alternate frames, every frame shows the odd lines (or every frame shows the even lines, not sure which). That reminded me of a similar interfering-with-interlace issue with the Corruption loading/title screen and Kickstart 3.1.

Its nothing special really.

A Amiga 1200 Setup with 030 and 8MB Fastram ,Workbench 3.9 and the display is set to Double in WinUAE.
Look if you have NTSC in youre Workbench Devs/Monitor/ Folder.

I made a test with an older version too. No problems with the Ross versions.

Sorry, i cant help more with WinUAE but i only use it for backup´s and some small tests, but nothing major like gaming or creating. (T_T)
