IDE hd
Hi.
I have an Amiga 1200 (not in a tower) that I want to connect a 3.5" IDE hd externally to it. So I bought a 2.5 -> 3.5 cable. With it came a power cable. The problem is there isn't any connecting pins for the power cable inside the Amiga. (Please don't say I'm so stupid I missed them...) So my wonder is: do I have to get some kind of external box to get the power from or what? TTFN - mikni |

it exists some Y cable to plug on the disk drive but the problem is that it took needed electric power on amiga power suplly and if you still have the original one + an accelerator card, you could meet some problem.
So you can bought a new power supply or find an old 386/486 powersupply with a on/off button on it and use one of the connector to plug your hd. The problem is that your amiga should look as my one before, card and cables all over the table |

Well, it´s like this, if you use a 2,5" HD, the power is ON the cable (44 Pins). If you use an adapter cable 44 Pins 2,5" -----> 40 Pins 3,5" the power supply cables are missing, so you have two options : 1.) get the power from the floppy (adapter) 2.) get yourself an external power supply. I use an Desktop A1200 as well and since I also got a CDROM, I use an old PSU from a 486 Desktop just for HD and CDROM !

I think I'll get the power from a pc box. (That way I can play with it right away TTFN - mikni |

Nice choice, and also you can use a Turbocard right away without any power supply problems

I'm in the final stages of towering an A3000 Desktop right now (not as easy as it sounds)...
68030/68882/25Mhz Softkick 1.3/2.04 Seacrate Barracuda 4.0 gig SCSI drive, drive cooler 8mb fast/2mb chip 25mhz AT (386sx) bridgeboard, w/ SVGA card 250watt ATX power supply A2232 serial card Sony Spressa SCSI CD-Burner (6x read/2x write version) 2 floppies, 1 for bridgeboard, 1 for Amiga Yes, you *can* use a standard PC floppy drive for an internal A3000 floppy drive, the cable hack posted on Aminet DOES work. Needed to use a new drive as the A3000 floppy drive has no bezel and is much taller than a standard 3.5" drive. With the ATX & A3000 pinouts at amiga auckland, I spliced the power connector from the A3000's measly 125watt power supply onto the ATX supply. Grounding the /poweron wire means that the ATX supply is always on, and I use the switch to turn it on/off. If I had an AT case I would have used the power switch. The biggest problem was finding a case that would fit the 15" wide A3000D motherboard. 99% of the cases I looked at were cut off at around 12" by the powersupply, or a shelf. I still had to take the metal cutters to the lowest internal 3.5" bay, but it all fits. Anyone interested in piccies? Things left to do: extending the keyboard/joystick ports to the back or front of the case. |

I'm very curious because my A1200 desktop + Blizzard IV 32MB/50/50Co + Flickerfixer(scandoubler)+ 2,5"harddisk keeps crashing while I just move the mouse around in Workbench or do file operations or play NDOS-games. I'm wondering if that might have something to do with supplying not enough Power to my Amiga. Also would you guys rather suspect the Turboboard or the Motherboard to be the mother of all those problems ? Thanks |

@freedom4u
well, tell me first what PSU are you using, the original A1200 PSU ?? If so, try getting one from an A500, they are way more powerfull and fit without any trouble ..... but be patient, there are two types of A500 PSU´s, one got 2,5 A output and one got 4,5 A output ..... the 4,5 A should be enough to fire up your A1200 If it still don´t work, try it without the scando/ff cause that´s *nearly* my configuration and it works fine with a 4,5 A PSU ... |

Oops...
I didn't tell ya specificly what PSU I was using, because I just had the A1200 original one in mind.
But now I just took a quick look at it and noticed that it is of cause an A500 one. It has a 5V line with 4.5A and a 12V /1A line plus a -12V/100mA line . Iguess thats the one you're talking about, which means that either my Mobo or Turboboard are not doing so well ;-( Or do you also have regular crashs ? I guess not. Thanks |

Btw. I had some weird crashes, the problem was, that the MAPROM feature of my Blizzard 1230 was broken, so I disabled it with a Jumper (ok, it´s a bit slower now but who cares) and from there on, no more crashes at all ..... |

Well, I'd suggest you trying the machine with a high power PSU. I think it could be the PSU not having enough juice to power your beast.

Thx guys
I'll see if I can get a hold on another PSU and I must try disabling MAPROM eventhough I don't think this will be solved that easy. CU |

First try taking out the memory from the accelerator. Then try taking out the accelerator completely. Fault might be in he card instead of the whole A1200.
