Gotek on external drive as DF1: and bootable

I have a Gotek (firmward 5.and it is working fine as an internal drive on my 1200.

I converted an external drive to use the Gotek. It works as I see it in Workbench but it does not seem to work when I want to boot from it.

What is the correct way to do this in the Amiga Early Startup Control?

I tried:

(1)

Main -> Boot Options -> Select Boot Device -> DF1
Main -> Boot / Boot With No Startup-Sequence

(2)

Main -> Boot Options -> Disabled all except DF1
Main -> Boot Options -> Select Boot Device -> DF1
Main -> Boot / Boot With No Startup-Sequence

These four options do not seem to work. The selector does not start.

Am I doing something wrong here or is this unsupported?

It only ever worked for me with HxC firmware.

Original ("Cortex") firmware for Gotek seems to be unreliable when installed in external case - never worked for me and I heard of other people having problems. In my case these problems disappeared after flashing with HxC firmware.

However, note that not all external cases are actually compatible. It depends on the interface used.

Strim, the unit works, its just not bootable.

You say that I can flash the Gotek with a HxC firmware?

Seems that there is a topic about that: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=78079&page=11

The website is quite a mess as I really don't understand what to download.

Its one of the problems I saw with original firmware. Seemed to work but menu never started.

Yes, although it's not free. The cost is very small though, something like 10 EUR.

I guess it's best to contact the author.

Interesting. I'm having the same issue. Also, I suspect my CF card didn't like the external gotek at all, since after disconnecting it, I can't boot the operating system on it anymore.

So, does the HxC firmware allow the external drive to be booted? Even if I have an internal floppy drive in place already? How will that work? The internal will be DF1 if the external in connected?

Was there an ultimate solution found here? I haven't bought either the Gotek or HxC but want to know the best way to have whatever I do buy bootable as an external drive.

To boot games from an external drive I'm sure you have to hard mod your Amiga motherboard to turn the external connector into DF0

I can see that you found a thread for one on Amibay. Here is another one, however he is not making them any longer:
http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php...ector-for-A500

They are quite simple to make though as it basically just switches the SEL signals before they reach the CIA chip.

If you just want DF0 and DF1 to be permanently switched (without the toggle switch), it could be done even easier.

Making a DF0/DF1 switcher on a 1200 is not as simple since the CIA is a PLCC package which is soldered to the motherboard. On a 1200, I'd recommend getting a small accelerator like the ACA1220ec, a CF card and use WHDLoad.

If you want to go the Gotek way, get a plain A500 with 512+512kB memory, KS1.3 and a DF0/DF1 switcher.
