Super Castlevania IV - Slowrom to Fastrom Hack (increases game speed)
Vitor Vilela, known for his SA-1 SNES patches, found a way to improve the game speed via a slowrom to fastrom patch. SC IV is 10-30% faster now without the requirement of the SA-1 chip. Very nice! Patched the US Rom and the game speed is indeed much better, especially the slightly sluggish character controls.

I have patched the US rom but I don't see any difference in speed enhancements.
Thanks for report. |

Maybe you've expected too much (you should progress further into the game). It's faster and smoother. Of course it doesn't fix the slightly jittery Konami scrolling. Looking forward to see more SNES games fixed, performance-wise

wow that's crazy they used cheap roms and sacrificed the game-speed as a result. I knew people who didn't buy a SNES because of the (reported) slowdown on various games. So they lost sales by doing that
Did Super R-Type use cheap roms too? |

I thought that was why Castlevania was running slower than it could? From the first link:
It’s a simple concept; because carts are an expensive medium for game distribution, developers could opt to put slower ROM chips in their games to save cost. In some cases, these slower ROM chips were a bottleneck that hindered performance during demanding sequences, usually manifesting as slower gameplay with a reduced frame rate. I thought Super R-Type might have used then too? If not, they must have really coded it badly! I heard a lot of developers coded the SNES like a NES to start with (because it purposefully used a compatible CPU) and that was also a reason for the some of the slowdown |

Yes, Super R-Type used a Slow Rom. The new patch doesn't change it, but it has now automatically SA-1 special chip support.

F-Zero just got faster.
https://github.com/VitorVilela7/fastrom/releases [edit] It's compatible with MSU1 patch as well. Last edited by Retroplay; 24 April 2021 at 17:22. |

The website mentions Super Castlevania IV full source is available. Does that mean this game could possibly be ported to Amiga? I'm not sure if they only include Fastrom sources or full game sources too.

No, it's the source for the FastROM hack.
