Upgrading Gotek from Cortex to FlashFloppy

Hi,

Can a previously flashed Gotek drive with the obsolete cortex formware be re flashed with flashfloppy?

Is it simply done with the update method?

Yes it can be updated. But you have to use the method from a fresh start here:

After that, updates can be done with the link you posted.

So I need..

... USB-A to USB-A cable
... pair of jumper wires

I have never flashed any Gotek before as my previous Cortex came with the Gotek drive. So I am new to this.

Can you please elaborate on how to jumper wires connect to my gotek, and and how the usb cable is used. And what process is used to flash ?

Am I missing the connectors in the 2nd Picture?

You can either solder two rows of header pins in the empty "holes" next to the already existing header, or just solder some cables in as reported in the wiki. I prefer the headers along with some DuPont wires as it looks neater.

After that, stick one end of the USB-A cable in the Gotek (where the USB pen usually goes), the other in the PC, install the drivers and tools (for Windows there is a video linked in the wiki) needed and it's done

Yes, I have heard about thr "DuPont wires" which seems the only way to go to avoid soldering..

I have ordered another Gotek with latest flashfloppy fw today as well.

I'm hoping I can flash my existing one after purchasing some "DuPont wires" which will then leave me with two Goteks

Keep in mind that you will most likely have to solder even with using DuPonts if you want to have a perfect contact.

Otherwise you can just stick or fix somehow - maybe with tape or a bit of hot glue - the cables (make sure to purchase male-to-male DuPonts, if so. If you solder an header in, then you will need female-to-female DuPonts) just long enough to let you do the flashing

I am also considering doing this. So let us know how it went @ransom1122

Also, what benefits is there to do this update? Im pretty OK with the cortex, but could be better. Feel like there is alot of resets having to be done to get stuff working. Also can't really get it to work once in workbench.

For USB A to USB A programming, I had drawn up this diagram to remind me of what I need to do:

The links in the diagram are:

You don't need to solder anything with the USB A to USB A method. You can bridge the required points at the rear of the Gotek to put it into DFU mode simply by using a couple pieces of paperclip that you bend to shape and then snug down with a slight twist to make them contact well, and, also make them easily removable afterwards. See below:

lol that's exactly what I did. The time needed for flash is so short that it didn't even need the effort of soldering!

I actually had some of these at home that I used. They plug in snug into the ports on the Gotek and then you can put the paper clip into the hole and viola! It is perfect:
