If I'm not mistaken, a cyber squatter is somebody who registers domain names that have absolutely nothing to do with anything that they are actually involved in, simply so that they own the domain name. Lots of companies that were late in trying to establish a presence on the web found out when they tried to register the most obvious domain name for their business that someone else had beaten them to it, and when the owner of the domain name was contacted, they attempted to sell it to them at a premium.

The powers that be with regard to domain names have begun to respond to the problem, and have in many cases taken domain names away from their registered owners and given them out to the companies that they logically are based on, but to the best of my knowledge, that requires the company to go through a fairly involved procedure.

- or -

If I am mistaken, then maybe a cyber squatter is somebody who likes to poop on other people's keyboards when they're not looking.

Well chuckles has got it pretty much, what you have to remember is that once you register a domain name you pay for 2 years up front, once this expires it's a once a year renewal. But here's the trick, you have to remember the expiration date otherwise these freakin' squatters will grab it and like Chuckles says, they will sell it back to you for a premium. My thinking is that there should be an easier way to get what was once yours back, for instance Internic or the Registrar you initially used, should allow for some time to renew your domain. In this case the owner of the domain neglected to keep his contact info updated so when the registrar notified him via email it probably bounced

EDIT: as a side note, this is some info on abime.net, note the updated info happening just today! I'd say that RCK is doing a good job keeping the domain info up to date

Domain Name: ABIME.NET
Registrar: CORE INTERNET COUNCIL OF REGISTRARS
Whois Server: whois.corenic.net
Referral URL: http://www.corenic.net
Name Server: NS1.ABIME.NET
Name Server: NS1.EVERTEST.COM
Updated Date: 09-mar-2002

>>> Last update of whois database: Thu, 28 Mar 2002 17:07:23 EST <<<

Well that helps too and this will keep the root servers updated more frequently then is normal as well

I also think that you will not let your domain go the way of these scumbag squatters as you'll be keeping your record up to date and remind yourself as to when you need to renew the domain name again
