Dev Lemmings level editors found

Over on youtube RMC showed the level editors that were used for both Lemmings 1 and 2. Unfortunately this software is still owned and can therefore not be shared with the community

Great stuff! But even more interesting is that there's also a disk in that video whose label reads "Lemmings II - Source & Graphics & Data". Would really like to see the source code getting released...

If they are unwilling to release even a level editor after all this time, I highly doubt they would release the source code to the game itself.

There is no real unwillingness, it's just that nobody knows who can actually give the go ahead. Old or not, someone can claim to own that property now that it's been unearthed again.

Honestly, once again, Sony doesn't give a fuck about the Amiga. The idea is not to free the IP, the idea is to make the editor public. Nothing really to worry about.

The platform is buried since long years now, and it only lives because we have people doing things here and there.

No one today is in charge or would care at Sony about the Amiga, so asking is a time loss.

Or if someone really wants to have a reaction, then release the editor, and see who comes after it.

I did do a quick investigation to the lemmings levels once and found F all

but with this offical editor you could probably figure out the data layout quickly and make your own editor without releasing the official editor.

also I wonder how the collision was done? palette checks?

iirc there was an unofficial Lemmings 2 editor probably because it was a dos disk? (can't remember)

also never saw it before but there is some info about the level Data on the Lemmings forum.

O and one of the best YouTube Retro channels.

Also really strange that Mike Dailly apparently doesn't have the skills to rip Amiga disks as ADF but he does have the full source code...

Not strange at all. Many Amiga developers had absolutely no clue about Amiga drive programming, preferring to use off the shelf formats that took care of all that for them.

Jon Burton of Leander fame didnt have a clue, ended up using DMA Designs system, lots of Psygnosis developers used Psygnosis' own format as well, ARC developments had their own system, Special FX had their own, usually written by one guy with basic instructions on how to use it.

Its how Rob Northen got so much work, because when it came to Amiga disk handling, lots of developers were clueless

Inadvertently contributed to the speed that cracks were available too, I'd imagine - off-the-shelf disk routines or encryption only need to be cracked once...

Pretty much, I wrote a utility that would read any PDOS protected disk back in the day, took about 40 seconds to image each disk to a disk image that was fully decoded, could be uploaded to me and be on my hard drive within 15minutes.

All these standard disk formats made our lives easier, Gremlin, Psygnosis, Rob Northen, most crackers had ready made imagers for all the main formats written so no need to mess about with warper files that were pretty big.

I'm sure it will happen, in good time. There is no need to rush right now, it had been buried for yonks so there is plenty of time to ask around if everyone that was in the original team is ok with this being released as-is.

Maybe Dave Jones could help on that
