Modern games in Psygnosis/Amiga style
After collecting screenshots of Psygnosis games on the Amiga recently, I thought about modern games (as in games which are not made by Psygnosis such as Wipeout etc. and which are preferably in style of the late 80s/early 90s Psygnosis) with just that weird atmosphere and design (let's just not talk about the gameplay that much) Psygnosis was known and famous for. I started a small list, do you know of any games which have that special feeling, setting, soundtrack...? Or do you disagree with some of the already posted choices? Then write here and explain why I will start with:
Legend of the Guardians (PS3, XBox 360) - This game has owls, and yes it does resemble Agony a tiny bit (it's not a successor in any way but the design is eerie at times and very moody and atmospheric, there should be a demo too, give it a try!) It's also not directly based on the movie, it's a different story inspired by the books. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (PS3, PC) - Starting out in that quiet, dark and windy castle at the beginning of Demon's Souls gave me all kinds of Beast and well, even a bit Defender of the Crown (Cinemaware) vibe, somehow this game even has a bit of "british" vibe, I don't know why, maybe it's just the voices - or is there something more? The whole style seems to be thought out by a guy in the UK sitting in his bedroom and thinking about how to get a new moody game out for that company with the Roger Dean covers... (I could actually go on and on why this game reminds me of Amiga games but that would mean an even larger wall of text ) Avatar - The Game (PS3, XBox 360, PC) - It's not a bad game but certainly not a smash hit, still it has the Roger Dean designs from the movie (Dean and Cameron settled their dispute some time ago by the way), the level designers really nailed the atmosphere from the planet Pandora with all its flora and fauna - which is practically a dean painting coming to life, there's just no denying that - and that practically means you also get that weird vibe from the game you had when playing Ork or Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga (well, at least from looking at their Boxart...) Wow there haven't been more suggestions? Psygnosis had a unique style, that's for sure.
Here is where Dark Souls has a huge Psygnosis twist: [ Show youtube player ] Velka the Crow - beware, awesomeness. |
