Wink Some general newbie questions

Hi!

Some newbie questions for ya!

1. How do I change the icons of files and drives?

2. When my amiga starts up it asks for disks and says that it can't find files whne it tries to start them up. The previous owner must have set the amiga up to load these programs at startup but I can't work out how to stop it doing this. I have tried using ed but it won't let me edit the file.

3. Some games on my A1200 run too fast. This is probably something to do with my ram? How can I slow them down?

4. Can you explain what all the directories contain in workbench3.0 ? What are all the different file types? e.g. tools etc.

Thanks

go into the S directory and edit the startup-sequence which is executed at bootup (but be carefull only to remove things you really don´t want to start up better make a copy of the file to a disk first

Each directory has an associated ".info" file.
An example would be your Tools directory. When you double click you hard drive icon you get to see the tools directory icon and therefore a Tools.info file will exist on your Harddrive. To see these ".info" files just change the view to by name, or use DOpus. Now there are two ways to change your icons.

1. Use an Icon editor and edit the ".info" file itself. (hard way)
2. You have a set of icons that you would like to use. Then just overwrite the ".info" file with the one from the set you'd like to use. For example you are trying to change the tools directory icon. Then you can backup the old icon file by first renaming it from Tools.info to Tools.tmp. Then you copy an icon file from the icon set you have and rename it to Tools.info. You should now see that new icon for the tools directory.
3. Use some icon management tool. (I'm mainly hover around Wb1.3, and when I do use Wb3.0 I'm pretty boring so I stick to the original stuff and thus I do not have experience with any icon management tools)
but here is a thread where Akira and RetroMan talk about this topic, its a bit further down the thread:

Hope that helps.

In addition to Retroman's advice, you can also try editing the user-startup file in the S directory, as a lot of custom assigns etc are performed there.

Check the WBSTARTUP directory for that last files !

MUI enhances the look/feel and usage of the WB, some Progs require MUI for running !

I held back on answering this one before because I know there are ppl which have a _much_ better understanding of the miggy OS then me, but as no one answered it yet, I thought I'd have a go. Anybody feel free to correct me, or add stuff to my answer.

Ok here is a basic 3.0 directory tree structure:

Tree Description

+---C: All sort of executables go here, mainly
| command line tools such as copy, dir etc.. which
| are invoked within an AmigaShell.
|
+---Classes: Files which enable your amiga to identify and read
| different types of files.
¦ +---DataTypes
¦ +---Gadgets
¦ +---Images

.. erm why do I have a feeling that there is a web page that has already got this information... Aaaahhaa .. here it is and it does have a funky layout too

http://www.nethkin.com/bmori/amiga/dos1.html

cya.
