CDTV is greyscale in PAL mode?
Hi,
I was trying to play some PAL demos on my NTSC CDTV over S-Video on my television last night. I don't have a real Amiga monitor. When I went into PAL mode with Degrader v1.30, it looked fine but is in greyscale. Can anyone suggest a fix? |

Get a cable for RGB and get a Sony PVM or other RGB TV frequency monitor?

Use an A520 RF modulator with composite output and hope that your TV will like that.

Finding a TV that does not have the composite/s-video colour encoding tied to the input refresh rate is quite rare. Some allow you to override it, but most just expect 50Hz = PAL and 60Hz = NTSC.
The computer does not change colour encodings even though the refresh rate changes. RGB is the solution! |

I'll just get a SCART to HDMI converter (they're cheap on Amazon) and a RGB to SCART cable from Amigakit. That seems like the best solution.

Those cheap converters are garbage, just so you are warned.
I have the same issue with my CD32, can't use it in NTSC or I get weird colors. |

Unless your TV and the SCART->HDMI adapter supports 50Hz over HDMI then it will look terrible as the converter/TV will rate change to 60Hz

An open source scan converter (ossc) will do it, and you will get a significantly better picture at the correct framerate into the bargain.
It is expensive though. There's also more info here. |

When I had a PAL CD32 I ended up buying a multisystem TV set, it is your best bet here in the states to display PAL modes. I have had NO LUCK with modern PAL / NTSC converters as they all force the video into 16:9 mode and if you try to correct with your TV to address the aspect ratio it will cut off the edges. |

Multi-system displays in the US are also quite rare. Most TVs sold here always were NTSC-only. This is why going full RGB/HDMI is nowadays the best bet, and why an OSSC is such a good purchase (and not that expensive compared to other solutions of similar quality) |

I wish that OSSC was around when I had my CD32, it looks like it is tailored for the older video modes instead of forcing HD modes on us. Very cool. With that said, I had no trouble finding a flat screen multisystem TV for $50 USD. Used to live between two air force basses helped.

I’m going to try my luck with the Amazon converter. If it ends up looking as bad as you all say, then I’ll probably return it and wait for the Vampire V4 to be released, and just run my video through the HDMI on that, or if it isn’t working 100%, go the OSSC route as suggested. The only reason I may be okay is that I’m routing this through a Denon receiver that seems to convert all kinds of formats - i.e., it may do 50hz HDMI. Running the S-Video or composite directly to the TV results in no signal when I run PAL modes, and the same thing when I tried it on a Dell monitor with S-Video and composite on it. I will see when it comes in the mail.

Best solution for you is to search LCD display that support on VGA input vertical refresh rate 50 and 60Hz with 15kHz horizontal scan rate. Alternatively as already pointed go for broadcast monitor like Sony PVM series (CRT recommended) - they are designed to deal with various TV signals and they should perfectly work with Amiga. |

Out of interest which converter on amazon are you going to try? It would be good to get a report back on if it works satisfactorily.

I already reviewed the OREI XD-990 on Amazon, I was unable to get it to properly display in 4:3 modes if that is the one you are looking at. My review is under "illy"

Definitely need an RGB SCART -> HDMI adapter if you're going to try anything. |

I bought this one. The second review down is from someone with an Amiga. |
