Cool REQ: Archipelagos (fully working)

Hi,

this is an issue someone found out at the German board, GAEB.
Archipelagos (TOSEC, AGA-fixed version) has a kind of "insta-kill" bug at Level 20, making this level unplayable.
Apparently, it's NOT an emulator bug. Someone tested it on his A1200 and it crashed at this point.
Could anyone please post here if he happens to own either the unfixed game or any other version different from the TOSEC one?
Thanks in advance.

Hmmm...I was surprised to find cracked alternatives of this game so scarce, but they are. Lo and behold, I have a non-TOSEC alternative. My TOSEC-ready filename is

Archipelagos (1989)(Logotron)[cr Quartex-Threat][m The Acid Warriors].adf

According to the intro, Threat took the Quartex crack (which removed the password protection) and crunched it to 1 file, as well as removing an illegal track, whatever that means. This may be the fix for the issue you describe and whoever made the AGA fix possibly used the non-fixed version. I looked at the AGA fixed version and it appears they could be different. When the Zone returns, I will post this version for you and maybe you can have better results with it (plus the TOSEC team can maybe snatch it for the next release of their dats).

LOL! All for the good, though. Let me know if the problem exists on this version.

Yes. Unfortunately, it does.
To try it yourself:
- fire up the game
- pass the password check
- press RETURN to select another level
- enter '20' (without the quotes)
- start game

You won't be able to move and shortly after that, you're immediately catapulted out of the level. This can't be normal behavior of the game.

Sooooo ..... I just got a bunch of used Amiga disks again (about 200) and noticed three copies of Archipelagos and one original, I will test all of them this evening and upload the non standart one, so hopefully we get this case solved TODAY !!!!

//edit : Sad but true, all copies are faulty or there is another game on it the original is working BUT since I got no manual, I cannot get past the copy protection ! I will remove the password check and test it out, but this will not be before weekend !

Smile Amiga Format version works OK

OK lads, I just tried my Amiga Format version (July 1991 coverdisk I think) and it works.

You can only choose to start on one of the first 7 levels, but in Sweet Cheater is the following:

Finish the first two archipeligos and hit 'RETURN' to select another.
Type "8421" and hit 'RETURN' twice. You can now go wherever you want.

I did that, started on level 20 and I could certainly move. I moved around for about one minute and no bugs, no kicking me out or rebooting etc. At the start there is a big green plant thing in front of you and lots of water. After about 40 seconds, lightning strikes the ground. I couldn't be bothered finishing the level but it definitely did not crash where you said it did.

Now does anyone else have a working version or does it need to be recracked etc?

Before anyone asks, this version of the game is a custom MFM disk format and not so easily uploaded in it's present state

Hey, that's good news Codetapper!

Well, if Twistin' Ghost says that it's scarce, you must believe that.
Yes it is ... thus in any case, it would be worth the effort to do an ADF version or a WHD install because there aren't dozens of cracks available like with other games.

As far as my original goes, I cannot test it yet, since I can´t get past the copy protection and there´s also no way to adf it Anyway, there is a compilation version in TOSEC .....

Archipelagos & Mind Force & Fast Break & Darkside (19xx)(-).adf

Anyone allready tested this one with level 20 ?

That is very likely the same as

Archipelagos (1989)(Logotron)[cr Quartex-Threat][m The Acid Warriors]

since that disk contains the single-parted version. I will maybe look at that compact after I wake up. (yes, I am asleep right now!)

You can use MFM warp to create a packed image with the protection intact.

I know that I ment there´s no way to make a useable adf for emulators

Just because you didn't want to know... (sorry guys, but I have had far too much drink today)

It you look at the current WIP, two Logotron formats are supported, one of them being the one on this game.

Also, as far as I can see, the copy protection of the Amiga Format version of the game is the same as the original - long and (lots of) unformatted tracks.

So it might be identical to the original anyway (apart from maybe the quality of the mastering - I think coverdisks were mainly done on the cheap + without any verification phase...)

Nice info.
So you could just send your ripping tool to the guys with the original (Codetapper and Retroman and maybe others), couldn't you?

I *think* those guys already have it...

However I just had a look though, and we have 7 different dumps of Archipelagos original disks already - all 100% correct.

I don't know if they are actually different versions (different data) though... The protection is certainly the same on all of them.
