itoa in gcc 6.5

Is there no "itao" in gcc 6.5 available? I thought I have seen it somewhere. I tried to google for it, and the usual answer is "use sprintf" which is IMO not really a good answer, as sprintf introduces a lot of overhead.
I found some itoa implementations but most of them are limited to the "classic" radix of 2,8,10,16 and I seem to remember that I had seen a rather generic one which could up to base 62.
